There are some differences in laws state to state. Studying what is on California if you are in Oregon is not the way to go. I have taken the test in several states and what is in the drivers manual will be adequate to the test. That being said there are several topics that they test you on in particular from what I have seen and here are the areas to know cold: (this list does not mean these are the only topics but are topics I have found to be important to studying closely)

Right of way including right of way for passing on mountains
Every statistic regarding driving intoxicated
Shapes, colors and meanings of road signs including those brown ones
Car lengths distances inc passing, stopping, following, etc
Ages and insurance
Method of parking and backing and use of rear view mirror
Speed limits and their classes
Meaning of lines on road and where you can pass
Meaning of stop, yield and other signs
Traffic lights

Iam going to take the written test in a couple of weeks(in texas).. you have given good tips. But really really scared if I can clear it in the first time. I have been preparing for a loooooong time now. Hope I can do it. How many questions and how many to pass? Pls give me few more guidance.

Dear you are worrying way too much. This is not brain surgery. The book will tell you all the information you need to know and what the test will consist of. This test is for you PERMIT which means it gives you the right to practice drive with a licensed driver in the car in preparation of the actual driving test. The worst case scenario is that you fail the permit test. So what. Just take it again. The test is taken by all sorts of simple people who pass it. Just go over the test questions in the back and have Self Confidence. If you still think you can't understand what the driving is about, contact AAA (American Automobile Association) and ask them about taking a driving class.

May I make a suggestion?? What language do you take for test?
As I noticed it's easier to take test in native language... I know they have in Hindi for sure, and I think in Tamil & Bengali as well... but you can ask for other languages... It's easier than in english, imho
