Ansuya,I fully agree with you on this.It is really sad to see so many people requesting for these papers.I think it is just our Indian mentality. All through school and college ,we depend on sample guides and test papers and even after college,we just cannot let go off this habit .
I had said in some other such thread earlier too..if illiterates can come to this country and get a license and even drive here, why is it not possible for highly educated people like us( most of whom are professional degree holders) to read a small dmv/bmv book and successfully pass a test?

Thanks for that, Sunitha! After looking at how the requests for test papers persist, and from so many people, I was starting to think there was something wrong with my reasoning!
I think it's easy for us to lose sight of the fact that tests and exams are supposed to be a MEANS to an end, and not an end in themselves. In other words, the test is there to get you to learn something. Passing the test doesn't necessarily mean you have learnt and understood principles if you studied the test, and not the material.
Ideally, then, at school and outside school, we shouldn't prepare for tests by studying test papers. I know this is not what happens in reality, and of course, I have used test papers in preparation for tests too. But this is a knowledge test for getting a driver's licence, not some maths exam. So I'd like to urge all you ladies out there (especially the ones in California, which seems to be the hotbed of all this misguided test preparation!) to study the manual, please, for your own safety and ours.

Tashidelek
I'm glad I was able to make you laugh ;)
I'm especially glad that you were the one who called it "cheating" so I didn't have to! I was really starting to wonder if there was something wrong with me in thinking that it is ethically unsound to be in possession of these papers, and to distribute them.
Of course, I don't want to be perceived as an old Mother Grundy spoiling everyone's "fun", but I used to be a schoolteacher, so the ethics of tests and testing mean something to me, and I also believe in doing things the right way, independent of my former profession. This means I am doubly concerned, especially because it is not "fun" to be out on the road when you haven't read the DMV manual at least two or three times (or even once, which I shudder to think may be the case with some people, judging from the posts here). I am also quite shocked at how openly these kinds of practices are being advertised in IL forums.
This is especially important if this is a country in which we have not lived for very long. This means we are lacking certain basic, general knowledge about driving, road signs etc. because we may be used to different systems from other countries.
My personal observation (don't take offence, but it's what I think) is that in India, I noticed a tendency not to bother too much with rules and regulations. I've had personal experience there with bribery, corruption, cheating, fraud, forged licences, people not standing in queues, etc. that made my hair stand on end. South Africa has it too, but not on the scale that I saw in India. It's different here, and it's one of the things that makes this country a pleasant place to live. We should respect that and shift our own perceptions of what is right and wrong accordingly.
I'm getting off my soapbox now! Please don't throw things at me.

I'm still laughing and now I am going to make you laugh. The posters on this thread think that there are 12 tests only given in Calif and they don't change and the six copies they have are really real copies of real tests. If that was the way it worked, wouldn't every Tom Dick and Harry in the USA be knowing this and probably doing it also? My understanding of state tests is that they change routinely to keep from having them distributed.
Your concerns about the safety of drivers just test taking are legitimate. The thought of some young mother pulling out in traffic against right of way and getting herself killed is frightening. I even saw years ago some guy in a pickup cut off a man and his kid on a motorcycle (no Indians involved in this story). They almost had a bad accident. The pickup pulled into a parking lot, the guy on the motorcycle followed him in and pounded him in the face through the open window. This stuff can get nasty.
As to India, I was once in a minor head on collision in Delhi in front of a police station. Our driver Neelam had a little Ambassador that got a little dent in the fender. The other guy who pulled out wrongly had a car that had a lot more damage. That guy was trying to beat up poor Neelam and the police came out. They asked a bunch of questions and then fined the other guy Rs800 of which Neelam got Rs100 for repairs.
My first several trips to India I did not understand the traffic systems there and found the habit of both directions of traffic zipping along at speed in the center of the road and then pulling to the side at the last minute so terrifying that I used to sleep in the back seat so I could not see what was going on. My theory was that bodies were not lying everywhere so there must be some method to this driving but I surely couldn't figure out what it was. Thankly all sort of lights flashing, hands out windows with signals, horn honking, etc started to make sense eventually. Even now I don't think I would be safe to drive in India unless it was some remote and less trafficked area.

Dear All (esp those looking forward to get the Test papers of DMV test of CA),
Please read the suggestions of some senior IL'ites here. Though it is ok to go thro' the test papers to know what kind of questions is being asked, it is definitely required to go thro' the Drivers Manual to understand the driving rules for your SAFETY (even if not of others).
Also, those who are having those test papers and willing to share with co-members here, please post the sample test papers as an attachment here.
NO asking for email ids or NO giving emaild ids in the Public Forums for the purpose of this sharing. This is again for your safety - to keep away spammers who come hunting for email ids!!
