You know what choosing a good coconut has been a problem for us these days. I shake the coconut to see whether I hear the water sound clearly, without any blug, blug kind of sound. A technique followed back home from my granny's day in choosing a good one.

But I always end with bad ones :(

Any tips on how to choose good coconuts?

    Choosing coconuts

Hey, you need to choose dark brown coconuts. Some coconuts would be light brown which would have been plucked while tender. These coconuts will get spoilt soon before the time they reach the shops and then us.

Also the 3 eyes (dark black spots near the kudumi) should be very healthy. Just press hard in one of those eyes to check them.

    Try shredded coconuts

    Roja,

Have you tried shredded coconuts? Don't you get them in the Indian stores in the US? Aren't they suitable for your cooking needs?

I feel it is safe to buy, easy to use and can be stored for long too.

    Knock on the coconuts

    Roja,

one more technique you can try while buying the coconuts is to knock on them. It should sound hard and not hollow.
