I usually wear this form of kacche sari on festival days or if there is any religious ceremony. It is quite comfortable and my family members say that it looks more elegant than the usual six yard sarees. I wonder why it is not more popular?

Speaking of the comfort factor in the kaccha sari drape here is a letter I got from the net which was originally written to a website of institute of draped clothes. The website was started by a great social anthropologist Chantel boulanger who through extensive research found more than 75 styles of sari drape.she was especially fond of the kaccha saree. she died prematurely due to stroke while she was touring post sunami afflicted regions Here is a copy of the letter written by a young lady to that site

REDISCOVERING TRADITION
By Sreelakshmi

I came across the web site of IDC sometime ago, just by chance. I have seen that lots of variations in wearing saris exist, but I did not know that anyone had seriously studied it. There is really a lot of information and links in the web site. It is nice to find people around the world show interest in saris, drapes etc. and it was nice to read the experiences of various people on the web site. On reading that, I felt like sharing my experience with you. So here it is.

Although I hail from a Brahmin family and we do retain quite a few traditions, we are not too orthodox. I had seen orthodox women wear the kaccha sari quite a few times but had not paid much attention to it. But after seeing the web site, whenever I saw a woman wearing a kaccha sari, I watched her sari with more interest and observed it. My curiosity, growing interest and fascination made me buy a new nine yard cotton sari and try the drape in private. With a bit of time and some practice I learnt to wear it well. But I pursued this in private because I was not sure how the family would react on seeing me wearing a kaccha sari. But the feeling that it looked good gave me courage and I decided to surprise my family on the occasion of a festival by appearing for the puja wearing the nine yard sari in the kaccha style. Everyone was indeed surprised but pleasantly. All of them liked it and praised me for trying the traditional style. Encouraged by the response, I decided to wear it once a while. But my liking for this has grown because I find it very comfortable. I no longer wait for an occasion to wear it but do so very often.

I must thank your web site for arousing my interest in keeping our tradition alive and I hope many more people will try out the various sari styles even if it is just to add a bit of variety to life. If you think my experience is interesting or encouraging for others to try these things please do share this.

You Have found the most amazing piccs of the nauvari saree.
My grandma used to wear this everyday. Also my grandmainlaw wears it now even at age 85.We tell her to wear a 6 yards but she finds this comfortable.

The nauvari is tied differently by different regions. After reading your thread I talked to my grandmainlaw. She told me that the maharashtrian brahmins wear the kashta(the part which is tucked at the back differently) than the kolis. In a brahmin style the front of the legs are covered. whereas in the koli style they are open. I guess this must be for convinience. Its easier to work that way.

Interestingly this type of saree tying was also practiced during shivaji's age and women would go horse riding in a nauvari. It would ghave been so convinient. remember jhansi ki rani's pics in school books...

Thanks Doctordev35 for keeping this thread alive. In fact I would suggest we try to find snaps for diff styles of tying the nauvari...This is fast dissapearing treasure.

Sonali

Thumbs up Re: Maharastrian Saree - nawwadi

These Maharashtrian sarees are very beautiful & looks very traditional.
The colour combinations are awesome.
Aren`t these sarees available in the usual 6 yards to tie as ordinary saree wearing?!!!
If so,which shops are these available in Chennai?
Kindly answer my query please!!!

Thank u ladies for ur response I will try to find and post more pictures of this elegantly beautiful but dwindling drape. It needs a resurgence and unless the younger generation find it beautiful convenient and comfortable and socially acceptable in the present generation and revive it it might end in a natural death .
