Default Transfer of residence to India after 10 years in USA

We are planning to move back to India after 10 years in US. We are concerned about the customs process and are still trying to get familiar with it. We plan to take all of our personal and household items but not many electronics (due to voltage issues we think it is best to buy these in India).
I have read some of the rules listed on Customs India website but still had some additional questions, if someone can please give some idea from their personal experience or knowledge:

1) India Govt website says that used personal items are free of duty: Is there a limit in Rupees on personal items? For example I have 10+ used purses (some of these are nice expensive purses) and 15+ pairs of shoes which I use (some of these I use frequently and the nice ones only on special occasions). Should I be worried that I may be charged duty on these items?

2) Jewelery: I had brought some of my wedding jewelery from india to wear in US. What can I do so I am not charged duty on jewelery originally from India that I am taking back to India?

3) China Dinner Set: We are planning to buy some China plates and dinnerware. if this is less than 6 months old when we go to India will we be charged duty on this?

Please let me know if you faced the same issues and have any idea. Thank you!

Default Re: Transfer of residence to India after 10 years in USA

Hi Comal,
I have heard mixed reviews about customs experience with shipments. Here is mine. You should be able to find more at the R2I club forums.
I shipped household items sans electronics and went though customs at B'lore. I didn't have any issues. I had shipped two big boxes of footwear, so don't worry about your shoes. Customs is liable to check all boxes(or they claim to). In my case they opened up boxes which had my shoes, LO's toys and a grass cutter and keyboard(for both of which we paid duty since they were brand new and boxed).
All my china and cutlery boxes were not opened but they were labeled as crockery. We did claim transfer of residence and these were allowed. Not sure about new china.
Btw, my shipment contained all my 20 purses as well. Some were not all that great but most were expensive leather ones, all were used though. If customs wanted duty I would have gladly given the officer all my purses for his use and got new ones here!!!
I was worried about my wedding jewelery too. Who keeps receipts for a decade! I had made two trips to India that year so I brought half on my first flight.I brought back the rest of my wedding jewelery and stuff I purchased in the US(diamonds inclusive) back with me on my last flight out. I was not asked anything by B'lore customs. I've had friends who have had a tough time with customs especially if they've come via Dubai and landed in Cochin. I guess travelers from the gulf countries are the ones harrowed by customs for jewelery purchase in the UAE.

I did ship furniture that were less than six months old. I saved the receipts for the furniture but then was not asked for it by customs. We didn't pay duty for furniture. The officer was more interested if we had a Flat Panel Plasma TV which we didn't have. He also checked with us on comp. We had shipped one(One is allowed) and so no duty.

HTH. If I remember any more I'll let you know.

Btw, if you plan to ship china, do get packers/shippers to pack it up for you and please do insure everything. I've had a neighbor who packed her own crockery and it was shattered by the time it got here. I got packers(since furniture packing was also involved) and I had just one minor casualty. B'lore customs opened a coffee table leg - not sure why(DH claims it looked like a sculpture!!!) and it was intact when they opened it but when it got to my apt it was in two pieces
