| Hi Saraswati, Welcome to US. What is the workplace for your husband in NJ? If it is central jersey, he can stay in Edison. The major minority population in Edison are Indians. You can see Desis everywhere. Indian bazaar named Oak tree road is there. It is very famous among the North east coast desis. You can get all the groceries here. You bring chudidars, sarees and other dress materials from India itself for the next 2 or 3 years (for Diwali and other festivals) Because they are very expensive and you cannot afford at the early stage in US. NJ is well connected with trains and buses. So travelling is not a problem. You bring winter clothes also from India (sweaters, glouse, hat and shoes) From October onwards NJ will be cooler, eventhough it is fall season. If you need any information you can mail me.

| Hi Saraswathy, Welcome to the H4 club! Do'nt forget to bring some extra safety valves and gasket, if you are planning to carry an Indian pressure cooker. |

| Hello Sunkan, There are plenty of Indian grocery stores in California. It depends where your SIL will be living. There is nothing like home cooked food and spices do make a difference. I would recommend getting spice masalas from India as it is fresh. Rekha |

| hi Saraswati, welcome to the US! Here is my 2 cents- I have alist of things you shouldn't carry. Don't carry sweaters etc( only a light one because you will need one initially). Tell your hubby to buy from here. The quality of warm clothing here is far more superior. Not worth it carrying weight from India. Same for you. You will get excellent sweaters and innerwear(vests etc)- called "thermals" here that help fight the severe winter weather. Good shops are Burlington Coat Factory for coats and sweaters and Innerwear you can get from walmart or macy's or JC penny (Macy and JC penny are a little more expensive- but they last and last and last) Basically the only way to beat the cold is by wearing layers of clothing. In terms of formal clothing don't do any new shopping. The stuff "you have already" is very good-trust me Americans tend to underdress alot. Your best stuff will be used only in Indian circles which will take some time to form. Also keep in mind your clothes will be washed in washing machines so choose accordingly. Then again its NJ so you may make friends very quickly! I found it a waste of electricity to cook with Indian utensils here(especially if you have aluminum vessels and there is a electric stove in the apartment which is typical) so I would not advice getting too many vessels too- better to buy from here- they are more heat conducive and save electricty in the future. Again Walmart is good. Ofcourse things like pressure cooker, idli pans, sieves etc are very helpful(from India). I had got a glass holder-its still useful!! Also used my hot water bag for aches or really cold winter days. Get Indian songs books, yoga stuff, ayurvedic meds, homeopathic meds, balms etc that make you feel good-you will need to surround yourself with things(since people are not easily available all the best. ~ Naazneen Last edited by naazneen; 9th September 2007 at 12:30 AM. |
