Hi,
The basic things we thought when we bought our GPS was Cost and User friendly.

We had a confusion between tom tom and Garmin.. but since tom tom was on sale, we got that one..

I guess these days almost all GPS has all the features.. The only thing i found was missing in our Tom Tom was that it just says "Turn right in 1/2 mile or 130 yards" .. i wish it could tell the street name, so that we can be sure we are turning on the right place...

Well. lets see what others feel..

Hi

First it depends on how much you are ready to spend ... since Thanks Giving is near you will get nice deal .. but you have to shop around ..( try Amazon, bestbuy ) which one to buy i would suggest GARMIN .. we have 2 Garmin nuvi GPS .. and we simply love it ..i will let u know which model we have ... in any brand dont buy lower end one ... there will be less feature in that .. try blackfriday website .. u may find nice deal..

An important quality of a GPS is quick response time. So when you search for a GPS, read the reviews and go for the one that have better response time. Also GPS that actually 'tells' the street names are very useful and its a wise decision to buy a model with this feature.

We have used both tomtom and Garmin's GPS.
From our experience Tomtom's response time is far better than Garmin's.
In city highways, where we missed exits and all, Tomtom is identifying it at the same moment and it will recalculate(alternate route) the route soon.
Garmin is taking long time(compared to garmin) to identify this and we have lost our way sometimes with roads with lots of exits and entries at that area.
what i personally felt is, eventhough Garmin is saying street names, Tomtom (once you used to its language),even without streetnames, is far better.
I guess tomtom gps with spoken street names are available now

We have a tomtom one and have been using it for the last 2 1/2 years. It is simply addicting and superb. You have range of products depending on what you need..it is quite inexpensive too..the last price I saw was just 100 bucks..I thought it was too good for the price.
Happy Navigating!
