Why should always we call to India ? Nobody calls from India

Hi friends,

I wanted to know in general how you handle this situation.

In our family, whatsoever may be the occasion, however worst may be the economy, come what may, we have to make calls to India especially Dh's side. Parents and in-laws are exceptions, of course.

When we greet relatives on festivals, why should we always take the first initiative to call/email always? Just bcos the festival first falls as per IST do we have to make calls first? On my SIL/BIL bdays and anniversaries also, dh calls them to wish first. Ok, fine!! Guess what, on our bdays and wedding anniv, they give a missed call in the morning indicating that their phone is free and its time for us to call and take their wishes. Now isnt this strange? SIL/BIL are earning well and cant afford to spare few rupees to call us even on our 'special ' days.

This taking wishes from people puts me off on our special days.

My sis and parents make it a point to go to public phone and wish us on all occasions. They make sure to send atleast some gift (even a small hairclip kind of for my DD and some Cds for DS through someone visiting us)

In-laws will only ask all the time, do you need something and then they will say they heard that everything is available in US, so whats the need to send from India?

Did any one else face such a similar situation?

majority of us on the same boat.

after the telecom revolution in india, infact it has become much cheaper to call from india,

but we as the NRI's (Not Required Indian), it's our duty to call.

said & done, if we need the relationship, continue calling...........

Cooool.We r also the same boat.

None had called so far after our marriage(almost 6.5 yrs).

Can't help it.Just we too can understand these people mentality know.Take it that way.Don't worry on that.

In India they will count only on our earnings not our expenses in the foreign country.What to do?Even if we try to explain also none will listen and believ.

Coooooooooool dear.Just forget it.

Yes same here too. DH gets calls all the time to his CELL phone , my inlaws do not make effort to call me on my cell phone or to the home number. They just call his cell phone and talk to him and then go on pretend and ask about us and hang up.
I used to get mad about these things but now I just don’t care. I call them and talk just for the sake of maintaining relationships.

We have always felt so - now a days, my hubby thankfully makes it a point to tell his immediate family that it costs the same or lesser for them to call from India and if they have not heard from us, they should call - believe me it works! It is the general misconception that we are far away from home and if we need people we should make an effort, unfortunately, things are all not great in India, atleast from what I have perceived in our families. Many a time, when we visit, that would be the occasion for the family to get together and I hear how they are all meeting after a long time.

Get tehm a magic jack or skype connection that will cost you less than 20 bucks.. so that they can call you anytime..atleast to wish on your anniversaries..

Well, be practical friend.. it is the Indian mentality..nothing much can be done about it..Though we have everything in India , people feel America is a better land.. Isn't that funny..

Don't Worry everyone of us is in the same boat and got used to calling from here..

Things will not change so easily and I am sure even 20 years later our future generations will be following the same tradition!!

Same here as well. DH's parents just give missed calls. And it seems it wouldn't be enough if we call every weekend. They want us to call every other day, as DH is the only son :(

Never bothered about the calls to in-laws, but when it comes to DH's sister, I get irritated a lot. If we don't call her for some time, she never bothers to call back, and u know, we repeatedly hear from our in-laws forcing us to call her. Sometimes, my in-laws just give a missed call to tell us to call my DH's sis. Hmmm.

If at all she calls us any time, call won't last more than a minute. But, the call goes on for nearly an hr when we call her. My SIL's family is financially sound compared to us. But even then, in-laws say its our duty to call her. And this was the case, even when back in India.

Spoke to DH twice/thrice about it, but nothing changed. So, just left it for the peace of mind.

So, forget about that and be happy.

O God!! I thought this was only the very few people I know and my family! And its sooooo cheap to call from India.. good know!
