    Hi friends,

I heard people make instant and fresh idli mix powder from india and carry to USA.They get the mix(urad+rice) dry grinded from flour mill and pack to usa and they mix in water and ferment and make whenever they want. Some people add some yeast to ferment the batter. This really saves lot of time.

Hi ilites if any one of you know this, please share with us so that that will help us save time by not making it from scratch or buy mix from stores made 3-4 years back etc sometimes if not all the times.

Ok, first it doesnt save lot of time.. 30 mins of grinding :) ;-)

instant or freshly made you got to ferment it overnight anyways.

Same proportion 3 cups of dry rice flour + 1 cup of dry urad dal flour can be used. Mix this with water, salt and baking soda.

    Hi,

Yes.Grinding the urad in blender and just mix rice flour and enough water and ferment and make dosas.Proportions are here.

    urad dal-1cup
    Rice flour-2.5cups
    Methi seeds-1tsp
    channa dal-2tbsp
    Salt- as desired.

Procedure :Soak Urad + 1tsp methi seeds+2tbsp channa dal in water and grind it to smooth paste.Mix the rice flour, salt and allow it to ferment for 8hrs and make dosas.

    Hi Nandshyam.

Yeah grinding takes only 30min as u said. But grinding not only consumes time but ,lot of cleaning, montiroing is needed. All those steps can be skipped sometimes when u r in hurry or run out of time with instant mix.We get very little time after we get back from work and grinding process and sound irritates in addition to my toddler kid's mischief etc.

Thankyou for your recipe. Can u tell me why do we have to use baking soda, when u are allowing it to ferment right?
