Hi msquare,

Usually, I buy frozen peas & spinach from American stores. From Indian shops, I buy frozen tindora, bhindi (ladies finger), papdi lilva, grated coconuts etc. Especially when the indian veggies are not fresh, these frozen veggies come in handy .

These are absolutely safe and healthy. Of course, we need to wash them thoroughly just like we would wash the fresh veggies.

As for canned foods, I only buy canned beans like chickpeas (channa) , black beans, pinto beans etc. For this...I thoroughly drain the water and rinse the beans before use. This is my personal preference and I find this extremely convenient.

Cheers
Krithika

Hi girls,
This is just a question not to hurt anybody. What is the need to buy a frozen food ?
Please visit Local Harvest / Farmers Markets / Family Farms / CSA / Organic Food and look for farmers market near your place.I belive in nature.Whatever is grown locally is good for our body and health. I'm not against Frozen food. Most of the frozen foods are not grown locally. They are grown in different country and it takes quite sometime to reach the shelf. In-addition to all the chemicals that are added to all genetically modified food do we need to freeze them.
Just my thoughts.
Thanks
Mangai

Mangai,

In reality some frozen veggies and fruits are more nutricious than fresh ones. For frozen stuff, fruits and veggies are allowed to ripen on the plant itself and then frozen. Whereas for fresh fruits and veggies, they are picked when green for easier transportation and then artificially ripened just before they reach the destination. And frozen veggies/fruits contain no more chemicals or pesticides than fresh fruits and veggies. Atleast not in the USA !

Not all of us can afford to buy organic produce all the time and especially the working women amongst us rely upon frozen veggies to help us out once in a while. The only difference to me between fresh and frozen veggies is texture. Frozen bhindi just does not come out cooked the same as fresh bhindi for example. But when unexpected guests show up or I have not had time to go buy fresh veggies, the same frozen bhindi comes in real handy!

My 2 cents!

Msquare,

From the American grocery stores such as safeway and wholefoods, I buy the frozen yellow corn, cauliflower, green beans, peas, spinach and mixed veggies / stirfry mixes. If the organic ones are on sale I buy those, otherwise the regular varieties will have to do. I don't buy the packets with the sauces in them, just the ones with raw veggies.

From the India store, I will buy frozen tindora, parval, drumsticks, grated coconut, bhindi etc.

From Trader's Joe's I buy cans of organic chick peas, rajma, black beans etc. Good to have when we don't have time to soak and pressure cook the same or when guests show up.

Pooja

Hey all,

We used to buy green peas/corn only as frozen .... It is better you have to use it within 10 days.
