| Hi all, While getting groceries and produce i sometimes go for canned foods(tinned), for certain products like chickpeas, green peas and other related peas. I find it easier than the one's sold in packets, which we have to soak and pressure cook. And another important reason to choose the canned item is that coz, we dont consume a lot, so one small tin is ideally gud,by which i need not stock in my cabin.A day b4 i plan & get 1 tin. But i wonder are there any health issues with this?!? Do they use artificial preservatives? I have seen many people going for canned foods rather than frozen. Hope it is not harmfull. Do u hav any idea abt the pros and cons of it? Plz do share with us.Thanks. |

| Depends on the food, dear Cindhuja. Canned beans may have high sodium content. So check that and buy. Per day one cna consume only 1400 mg of sodium..Even less if there is BP problem.. Canned and even processed tomato paste is good because the lycophene can be absorbed better... Planning around fresh foods helps.

| Dear Gowri I agree with you, canned food is not advisable because their shelf life is variable. Also there is a high proportion of preservatives which affect the composition of the foodstuff, not to mention changing its taste altogether. Regards.

| Hi Cindhuja Thanks for starting this topic. I was also wondering about the health hazards in using canned food. I regularly buy chickpeas, rajma, sweetcorn, coconut milk and chopped tomatoes. I hope our friends here throw more light on this. Cheers jaykay |
