Hi Sindhuja

My son will be going to Speech and Debate camp in Iowa for three weeks. He has been going for the S&D competitions and Model UN competitions through this year and last year for a minimum of one week , so I am used to that a little bit.

SundarUsha, Sinduja and Anandchitra,
Nice to know so many of us are in the same boat.
I will say a prayer for all the kids to do well and be happy.
Anandchitra,
Regarding your question about high school courses. It usually depends on the student. If they have already completed certain courses in middle school then they have to take the next highschool level course. For example if the kid has done spanish 1 and 2 in middle school then have to take spanish 3 in 9th grade. I don't know about AP classes in 9th grade. Maybe your son did high level social studies in 8th grade.

Some times the school system pushes the kids to do higher level so their data looks good. In my opnion we parents should make the right choice depending upon our child's strengths and weekness. In the end all that matters is the GPA.

Dear Ac
I agree with ars. In addition to GPA, colleges also look for leadership activities in school. Every child is different in his talents and activities. It is so nice that the system here allows them to be that unique person.

Dear AC,
Sorry I did not check your post earlier. My second one is going to High school coming fall. I agree with ARS and Sundarusha. Will come back later to discuss about the courses.

Dear AC,
Is your son a rising sophomore or a rising 9th grader?

Most of our desi kids take heavy load, whereas others (with some exception) take a little lesser one. But they concentrate on EC’s (extra curricular activities) like cheerleading, athletics, student council etc…. My daughter’s counselor does not encourage kids to take many AP’s. But the same school AP co-coordinator insists the student to take as many AP’s as they could. The school really plays double game here. As a parent, we need to think the best for our kid and help her/him in the course selection. My younger one is challenging herself with Spanish III, AP US History, Honors math, Pre-AP bio, Honors chemistry and Band (clarinet).
