Default Medicines inUSA

I am planning to visit USA. I am told that it is not easy to procure medicines even for minor ailments like in India. Any site where we can easily find information on prescription and nonprescription medicines so that we can limit stocking the drugs for our visit.

Dear lakshmi,

If you are planning a short visit(<6months),it is better to bring them from india.TAke a prescription from your family doctor for the medicines you bring here. For ordinary coughs and colds and fever and cramps our medicine will hold good.It is always better to carry medicines(with prescriptions) from india for shorter trips.

Hi Lakshmi,
You can buy ordinary pain killers, fever reducers, cough&cold medicines, vitamin and calcium pills over the counter, even for kids. But you cant buy Anti biotics and other priscription medicines here..we can buy with insurance, otherwise we have to pay a lumpsome amount from our pocket.so better, buy those from India and keep the priscription with you.Leave your worries and have a nice trip.Bye

Hi Lakshmi,
I have some general info for you.
There are many non-prescription meds available at all pharmacies[called drug stores]but they are not cheap.Whatever prescribed meds you need, you can bring with you a supply to last you for 2-to3 months and when you get here will need to get atleast a family practitioner .Internet pharmacies are not always reliable, may be someone will inform you of a good one .

Hi Kriika ,Revathy and Parvat
Thank you all for the response to my questions. In India every medicine can be purchased without a doctor's prescription including narcotics just for the asking. The shop keeper will dispense wany medicine without demanding a prescription This is not the case in USA where some medicines need prescriptions and some do not. I am looking out for such a list of drugs which can be obtained without prescription so that I need not carry them from India. Any site on internet that clearly demarcates the drugs as prescription drugs and non prescription drugs will be of help.
Lakshmi
