Smile Re: help - do you use US made blenders for idli batter?

Hi Sowpar,

Hope you saw my previous post for the proportion of rice:dhal.

I wanted to give you a link from where you can purchase Indian wet Grinders.

ULTRA Pride+ Wet Grinder from INNO Concepts Inc for Indian kitchen appliances for Idli, dosa, vada. masa for tortilla, masa grinder, idli grinder

They have 1.2L and 2L. In case you decide to buy , I would suggest you go for 2L...if you have idlis and dosas often. It's definitely worth it.

Otherwise you can always ask someone to bring it from india if they are coming to US very soon.

Bye for now
Cheers

Dear Sowpar,

No second opinion as to grinder is the best. I can find out the website from my friend if you wish to buy online.

I use Preethi mixie. I Soak everything overnight. Freeze it for sometime. Then grind. This way the batter doesn't get hot. I get very nice idlis. The ratio is 5 cups(the electric cooker's measuring cup) rice:1 and 1/2 urad dhal without skin + 1 tsp of fenugreek seeds. I grind the f seeds with rice. With the big jar I'm able to grind urad dhal in a single batch and rice in four batches. 5 minutes break between batches would be a good option. Is your mixie totally gone? Hope you would have checked the overload button.

My friend was using Hamilton beach and she used to get the best idlis. Sorry that I've no idea whether she followed any technique in grinding or not. She is yet to settle in India as she left USA for good. Would ask her if she gets back to me.

Thumbs down Re: help - do you use US made blenders for idli batter?

Hi Sowpar,

You are most welcome! Glad I could be of a little help.

Finally, you got to decide what is best for you depending upon the frequency of usage and consumption of idlis/dosas.

One of my friends had ordered it online (the smaller size) and now feels that she could have got the bigger grinder with 2L capacity. Moreover, when you have kids, you surely got a good investment going for the 2L.

Btw, did you you get a chance to buy a blender?

Cheers
Krithika

I have been using the Osterizer 14 speed blender since 2 years. Though its a bit difficult to handle compared to Indian mixers, I could prepare good dosa/idly batter with it.. Also the price is much cheaper compared to Indian brands. Try adding a handful of COOKED rice too while you grind the batter, your dosa/idly will surely turn out softer.

I've tried grinding dosa and adai batter with Braun blender -- it is just utter
It takes forever ; have to grind only small amounts ; rest the machine for 15mins. after each round and sometimes have to grind the whole dough again !! Not worth the time wasted at all ;; I can get only nice purees, chutneys, juices etc. so am also going in for Indian mixie / grinder only !!

Hi Grace

Dont feel bad ma! You can go in for the wet grinder (I gave the link in my previous posts) or as latha suggested you can buy the Oster/osterizer blend. It is very good and has a powerful motor.

Though you have to grind in small batches, it is better than others.
But keep in mind that the proportion for rice:dhal differs in grinders and blenders. (but sure you would know that)

Cheers
Krithika(Jithiks)

Hi Sowbar,

I just want to tell my experience with the blenders. I bought a mixie from India (Preethi Chepro). Intially for three months I used to make Idli/Dosa batter in that only. But now I am using Black and Decker Icecrush master blender. Its really very good. I feel very comportable to operate my BD blender than Preethi. Because I had faced so many times the problem of Overloading in Preethi. In this model the Mixie will got off if overloaded and it will reset automatically after half an hour only...

I got the BD blender in a deal for only $5 from L&T. Still now I feel more worth for the money I paid. Even I am having a warrenty...

My friends are using Faberware and Oster. Both are also doing very good. Yesterday I saw a deal in L&T for faberware blender for $12. If you want, check it out...

My personal thought about Grinder is it will be worth only if we got it from India.

-Dhana

Hi all,
I have a preethi mixie from India. Till now I use it for idli/dosa batter..its works fine..but somehow I dont like the taste of the idli/dosas that much..it may be because the batter is not fermenting properly because my house is always very cool..
Now the thing is I'm going to India soon and thinking of getting a wet grinder...what do u people suggest...is it worth the cost, carrying from India ( I mean baggage weight) and the space it occupies in our American kitchens ( we all know how much cupboard and counter space we get here). please let me know ur views..

thanks
