| Hi, I think it is better to wait for citizenship instead of giving up GC altogether. If you have citizenship you have an option of coming back and it will make things simpler. But if you lose your GC it will be very tough. Once you apply for citizenship you will get it within almost a year. Thanks, Kavya. Quote:

| Hi Honeyj, Kavya has a point. Before you drop everything and move back, consider the fallouts of your decision. What I’d suggest you do is “arrive” at the decision rather than “make” one. Make a list of reasons that make you want to go back. They could be emotional or practical reasons. Then, against each reason put down which ones warrant immediate return and which ones can wait or will not be impacted much by returning after a couple of years. For example, spending time with a close relative who may be seriously ill is a reason to return immediately due to the uncertainty of the person’s health and his being alive. But a reason such as to raise your little one in Indian environment, although perfectly justified, is something that can wait a couple of years. A couple of years of delay in returning will not impact your kids’ environment adversely. I think if you do this exercise you will get a lot of clarity on what are your reasons for going back, what should be the time frame of your return and how US citizenship fits in your priorities. A well-informed decision will always stand you good in the long run rather than a decision made primarily on emotions and impulse. We all have our emotional reasons to do a thing but the final decision should not be made in an emotional moment. Life is a long journey so think a little bit beyond now and today because sometimes decisions taken today cannot be reverted tomorrow. You have to live with them all your life. So give due consideration to all factors and then arrive at your decision. You will feel much more confident about the decision you have made and will be better equipped to handle any good or bad surprises that you may be posed with on the way. Good luck! SS |
