Hi Poorani,
Welcome to IL!
Check the link below which is the official site and I am sure you will learn more about ITIN Number, and all other tax formalities.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Yes, you need ITIN number to file the taxes. Once you apply, you will get it within 15 days ( I guess). Then with your ITIN no. and your husband's Social Security Number, you are all set done to file taxes. April 15th is the last day for filing taxes. All the best!

Thumbs down Re: Tax filing in USA and ITIN Number requirements and how to apply

Hi Poorani,

You people can visit any H & R Block Office to get your tax filed. They will take care of everything.I suggest you to apply your ITIN number asap...as during peak times it will take sometime for your ITIN number to get generated & your husband will receive tax refunds only after you get your ITIN.

Hope it helped..

Hi Poorani
Most professional tax preparers will charge you about $250. Payments for car are not deductible for taxes and neither is rent or electricity. Generally, you can itemize your deductions if you have mortgage payments for a house - the interest portion alone is deductible as well as real estate taxes on the house, state taxes paid (which is shown on your W-2), charitable contributions, etc. If the total of your itemized do not exceed the standard deduction amount of $10,700 (assuming you are filing Married filing joint return), you can take the standard deduction amount of $10,700. I would suggest you get a 1040 booklet from the library and go through it. You can either purchase a software or there are many online services which walk you through filing taxes for a fee that will be less than $250.

Hi - you need the ITIN to file a tax return. Usually you need the social security number but for those who have not got that yet, you can apply for the ITIN so that your husband can file a joint return. Although the due date is 4/15/08, you can request for an extension of time to file (not to pay) till 10/15/08. Visit the IRS website for more information at Internal Revenue Service

You get an extension of time by completing the Form 4868 - see link below.
