Even I am wondering how do you everyone carry (carryon baggage/Checkin baggage??) GoldCoins to India?
Is there any restriction on number of coins/bars that we can carry?
Do we need to face any issues at Customs?

Look on India Embassy website...it's all there pertaining to bringing gold into India. And NEVER put valuables in checked luggage. If it was me I would carry in pouch under my clothing that you can access for customs time.

Per Indian Customs rules travellers are permitted to carry a reasonable amount jewellery (read gold) with them when they arrive in India.

There is no free or duty free limit for gold bullion. Gold coins and Bars are considered as bullion. However if you are willing to pay the duty (which I believe is around Rs. 300 for 10 grams) you will be allowed to bring in 10 Kgs of gold coins/ bars.

(No legal advise- Refer to Indian Customs Website)

Why do people buy gold here and carry?
Is it not better to buy in India itself.

By the way Import Tax is 4% on Gold.
The figures you guys quoted are lot higher and make it a loss making proposition on top of the risk.
