Dear GPriya,

I bought the Pillsbury Brand Bread Flour from Wal-Mart. It worked wonders. That may not cater the needs of nutritional lovers as it is not a whole wheat flour. But, for the households who need it once a week, it a very good choice.

Two factors which I want to share about are:
It is chewy a bit, to the ignorable extent.
When we start rolling it doen't stretch like Indian flours. But, after half-a-minute or so, the ball comes to our court.

It stayed very very soft and met the standards of Indian chapathi more than 85%. The barley content in the flour is the reason for the 15%, I think. I had a stock, till the next day.

Personally, I'm not that comfortable with the Indian flours I'm getting; weird bitter smell and taste, as they might be old. With regard to me Chapathi is a grand breakfast which needs good efforts. So, I feel far better with this flour and I feel like putting some efforts in it. On the other hand, it is waste working on a bad Indian flour only because it is from India.

I use whole wheat flour from American stores, to make dosa. By adding a lots of onions and other flavour inducing Indian stuffs, we manage to eat the good flour, too.

Hi Meena,

For ghee you can buy Land O Lakes (UNSALTED BUTTER) and make ghee at home.
Or you can buy from COSTCO-UNSALTED BUTTER- there will be 4 packets in one.

Both are of good quality.

Cheers
Krithika

Meanwhile we need to know, if there is any American substitute. Like rice, Atta Price also increased, partly because the exports from India have reduced and the Dollar slide.

I am also looking for substitutes to ghee. What ghee do you all use. Is it possible that we buy American White butter and melt. Has anyone tried it ??? I use Amul ghee as of now. The small tin costs $7 here in Texas.

I tried Nirav Brand and even patel brand. They both does not have maida. Golden temple has maida in it. Try Nirav or Patel I have been using them for so many months now and everyone in my family likes it.

generally we use whole wheat flour.
1 or 2 months back we bought golden temple whole wheat flour. It doesn't taste or smell good.perhaps it might be old stock.
this one is not going in our house & the new one is not getting in because of having earlier one.
I have to bring the new one

If you could try to get Nature's Best Atta, that would be the best for Pillsbury lovers like me. My mom who came from India said that the Atta is even better than that in India. The next choice is probably, Swad - you can sieve it for rotis to be soft.
