travelling to India with gold ornaments

Hello Frineds,

We are going to India for a vacation and I have some old jwls with me . The weight of jwls is nrealy 110 gms . I heard from somebody in our Forum that the rules at India customs have chnaged from Last month and they are appliying tax on the gold jwls from NRI's.

I traveled with same jwls two times betweenIndia and US. I did not had any issues with them befire.

Please help me on this ..

1) can I carry those jwls to India or I need to leave them here ?

2) they are the basic ones like Thali and bangles little earrings and stuff but I cant wear everything on me while travelling with my 3 old.

3) If I need to pay the tax hw much it would be ?

Please let me know if anybody knows about it clearly.

you can open a bank locker here and put all jewels in it. This way it be safe.

If you still want to carry -- this is how I usually do... put most of the stuff in my purse.. if there are bangles and all... I wear it when the flight is about to land... few I put in my cabin bag,my laptop bag, my DH's laptop bag, his cabin bag.

This way they have no means of finding the total weight... else I might be lucky so far.

Hi Falguni,

Thanks for your quick reply. I have to carry them any way. I will try to wear some of the heavy ones like thali and bangles when the flight is about to land.

remainig should be less. But I did not hd any issue before if I Keep then in a single purse also.

cool... I too never had any issue before.. but who knows what happens when... so always felt it safe to distribute stuff... this way even if one purse or bag is stolen (God forbid)... the rest can be safe.

Siri,

I am also traveling to India in next 15days.I read in one site that gold taken from India is not taxable.A lady passenger can carry upto 20,000 rs worth gold and male passenger can carry 10,000rs worth gold (purchased from US) .It is best to wear the jewellery before the customs.Also distribute it to your husband.Lets see what others have to say.

I think our jwl shouls come under appendix F and part b.Becuase they are bought from India only.
