Ramya,

I think you have to be in the 'schooling area' to get the admission.
Admissions for them are to be got from the school by calling them when does the admission begins.
Usually here we do get a circular in the pre-school itself.

Hope this helps a little bit!

I'd be also more than gr8ful if some one could give on the admission procedure in details and how the public school system works.
What are the factors we Indians consider before selecting a school?

When is the right age to send my kid to preschool...who doesnt know English yet...

Hi Shravanthika,
I think you can check it with the nearby preschool in your area.
Maybe 3 years is appropriate to join the preschool.
Regarding the public school procedures, you must be in the 'school district'. Bus facilities are available, free of cost.
Regarding the school, you can verify with the neighbours whose kids might be attending one in your area and also call the school and get the information.
Maybe other ilites will throw some light on this matter!

Hope it helped you a little bit!

Hi,

Yes for most schools the admissions are in Jan/feb. A child can start pre school whe he turns 3 and can start Kindergarten when he turns 5. Each state varies differently as far as the cut off date is concerned like in Ohio the cut off is sep ie., a child must be 5 by sept of that year to start kindergarten. So please check with your state. Depending on the area you live in, the school district is specified. so find that out first, once you know that, go to the school's website and check out the procedures for admission. Depending on the street you live in the school district, the school system automatically expects you to go to that school ie., from my understanding you donot have a choice unless you move from that neighborhood. If you know your county, simply by doing a google search, you can find out your school district. All children kindergarten age by defualt have access to public school system. And if his preschool is part of public school system, the school should also send information automatically for kindergarten admission procedures.

If you do not have enough information about your school district, it simply is not a bad idea to just walk into the school closer to your home and speak at the office - just let them know that you have a kindergartner and you need information. Most schools and personnel there are quite helpful and will guide you appropriatly - either by giving you phone numbers or website information for the elementary school you should send your child to. And I am sure if there are choices availbale, it will be listed in which case it will rest on your shoulders to check which school is best - a lot of information about schools is also available in that aprticular state's website - search for dept of education, state. You will find everything you need to know here.

Hope this helps.

Srama has covered most of it,I would like to add this.Ramya,if you are staying in an apartment complex, just check with the aprt office regarding the school district you belong to.They will give you a list of the elementary school(from K-5th gradeor 6th grade),middle school(6th to 10th ,I think) and then high school.

Once you get those details, like Srama said,go into the school website and check all details, especially the age cut-off.Public schools have only two criteria for admissions-should belong to the school district and age criteria should be satisfied. They will not compromise on any of this.If the age is not satisfied, like in my son's case, you will be forced to put your child in a private school or wait another yr to get your child into kindergarten in a public school. Also,I heard that in some places like Philly, children can go to kindergarten at age 4 itself,I am not sure though.

If all conditions are satisfied, apply for admission to that school.

Hi Srama,

I would appreciate if you clear my doubt, My son is 2 yrs and 6 months. He will be 3 yrs old in May. It seems that, a child can attend pre-school if he/she turns 3. If the acadamic year starts on September, can i send him to pre-school? for that do i need to go to a pre-school in Jan/Feb and enquire about admission procedure. Could you please clarify my doubt?

Thank you.
