Default Re: No more Sona Masoori Rice from India????

Friends,

We are planning to visit New Jersey next week and i'm planning to buy couple of bags of rice(Both sona masoori and Idly rice).

I always use Ganesh and Lakshmi brand sona masoori rice. For Idli Rice, I have used only Ganesh brand idli rice.

I want your sugession of what other brands of rice are available in the market and how good is it and how much does 20lb and 10lbs cost.

Thank You very much.

I have used the regular long grain rice - Mahatma, mainly for making dosa. In cookingnot sure how sticky it mightget.
They have small sizes too, which you can buy to try.

Hi Smilylittle,
I was using Lakshmi brand idli rice for making soft super idlies.
Now Lakshmi idli rice is not available in our area. Last week I
searched in Artesia also. But of no use. Where do you get
Lakshmi brand idli rice now?

Dear AC,

Have some questions;

What is the proportion? Puni once told, 3:1. Is yours the same?

Some people said that they didn't get perfect dosa, too. Is the result good?

Any particular tips to soak, grind or something like that to get good dosas?

I used Mahatma rice for Pongal. The result was, Perfectly ultimate. But, it yields lesser in quantitiy as opposed to our usual Indian rices. Is the case same with batter, too?

Does it look like an exam question paper to you, AC?

Hi all,

I have used mahatama for both idlis and dosas. I use 3 part rice; 1 part urad dal and 1 part chana dal. soak it altogether and then grind it. it comes out to be good.

I hope it helps.

hi all

i'm an indian student in the US for a short period of time - 3 months.

The area I live in Miami has no Indian presence and no Indian stores either..

Which brand of rice that I can find in American stores comes closest to what we eat in South India..?

Please do tell me the cooking instructions too..! It will be a great help..!

Thanks.
