open dated tickets for returning from USA

hey friends
my mom is travelling to US on march 11th to assist my sister's delivery..the due date is on july 17th....so i have to get her ticket for going there and open dated ticket for coming back in september or october
i want to know
1) how to get open dated tickets
2)before how many days we have to confirm the date for open dated ticket

As of I know you will have that option in Indian airlines and british ( not sure about british) too, any travel agent can reserve that

as an alternate, you can enquire to a travel agent abt airlines that allow change of date free or at low cost. As far as I know, cathay pacific allows one date change on the return leg free of charge and singapore airlines allows date change for $10 per change.
