India Trip: Gift ideas for family

Hi Friends,

We all face this situation every 1 1/2 to 2 years. I am going to India in the next few months and am scratching my head as to what to buy for my friends and family there.

After thinking about it a lot, I decided to take the help of friends here to come up with a list of recommended gifts, categorized by gender and age group. While it is hard to get a perfect grouping, I found that following grouping to be homogenous for shopping purposes.

Infants below the age of 5
Girl--------age 6 to 17------ School going
Boy--------age 6 to 17------ School going
Women-----age 18 to 25-----College going or just started working
Men--------age 18 to 25-----College going or just started working
Women-----age 26 to 55-----Married with/without kids
Men--------age 26 to 55-----Married with/without kids
Women-----age 55+-----
Men--------age 55+-----

Can you post the gifts that you bought for your family members and we can build a good list that would be helpful for others in future. Thank you.

For the 55+ men the following gifts will surely be appreciated.
1. Aftershave lotions and deos
2. Scarves and socks
3. Lightweight coats

When you return to the US you could pick up the following gift items:
1. Kurtas or Sherwanis if you are looking for something more formal/dressy.
2. Silk ties
3. Cuff links

Some people uses perfumes while going out and hence can include in the list. Similarly, the watches from Maceys are really cool and my folks loved wearing the same.

Any dry fruits is also a good & healthy choice.

Will include if any more comes to my mind.

For children below 6- large writing slates can be given. My son got one- you can write on that with a blunt pencil and can be erased with the help of a rod provided in it. It was very useful for him to write and draw. Toys or dolls also.
For children from 6 to 17 - You can try crayon set, game CDs, innovative lunch boxes or water bottles, fancy bags, belts or such accessories. Cosmetics for girls and toiletories for boys.
Dry fruits and chocolates are always nice gifts for anybody.

Wax crayons,Drawing colour pencils,building blocks can be given as gift to the children below age 6 group.

Now a days aged people are suffering with knee pain problem so even knee pads can be given as gift. Even if u get vitamin tablets without Dr. prescription Vitamin tablets for eg Calcium tablets, B Complex tablets.

For aged ladies Cups ,bed sheets can be given .

For my uncles and dad i bought electric razors which we get and for my unmarried cousins got gift pack of shower gel ,perfume and any one more thing in that....for my sisters little kids i got some mini skirts n jeans and purses and drawing books which we hardly find in india ...for my own brother bough laptop and for my very old grandparents bough sweters and woollen slippers ....some make-up kits for my sisters..

Cosmetics,Like make up kits,
Branded personal care/hair care products which are not available in India.
For Children Just got o Barnes and Nobles or any other book shop U'll get the perfect thing for them...

It would also be find if you could buy a single gift for a family. If the family is very close and near, u could get them some gold biscut or some pearls or emeralds which they can later wind with the designs they like.
