    Hi all,

While Im all excited abot my mom who will be travelling from B'lore to SFO the first time , Im worried as it is her first international travel.

I have many concerns. Infact she wanted to travel with me bcos it is her first time, but again me going to India meaning tickets for myself and 2 kids to and fro. Due to finacial commitmnts we plan to India every alternte year.

    Pls address the follwing concerns:

    1. Is it safe to opt for wheel chair assistance even if the person is healthy? Are there any criteria for getting this preference?

    2. The medical insurance. Pls give me some good leads for the same or some consultants in Blore who can do the same. The types of insurance, cost, coverage etc

    3. Should I look for some travel companion. IF yes, how to go about. Did anyone find some luck earlier pls share your experiences.

    4. Food inflight. She does not eat outside food (as did not travel much) so can she carry some stuff from home.

Pls help me out if anything important I have missed.

    Hello there

    1. Is it safe to opt for wheel chair assistance even if the person is healthy? Are there any criteria for getting this preference?

That is the best option for any elder travelling alone. It makes sure she reaches the final destination airport without any issues. All she has to say ..."I need wheel chair assistance".No need to give any explanation.

    2. The medical insurance. Pls give me some good leads for the same or some consultants in Blore who can do the same. The types of insurance, cost, coverage etc

    Don't get any...They are all useless.Period.

    3. Should I look for some travel companion. IF yes, how to go about. Did anyone find some luck earlier pls share your experiences.

No need.Just stick to wheelchair option.

    4. Food inflight. She does not eat outside food (as did not travel much) so can she carry some stuff from home.

Go to airline website & opt for Veggie option..you will get mostly closer to home meals. She can carry small boxes of solid food..if it is a must...if she needs curry/gravy..it can be mixed along with rice or chappathi ahead of time before entering the airport...No liquids...as you know...

Hope it helps ease your concern for your loved one.:)

Always go for proper insurance, otherwise its too risky. I know someone whose visiting mother didn't have any insurance and had to be hospitalized here. She ended up getting a huge hospital bill of 85K. :drowning

    ABC. Please see below.

Is it safe to opt for wheel chair assistance even if the person is healthy? Are there any criteria for getting this preference?
Ans: Yes it IS safe and more comfortable. Airline staff asks the wheel chair passenger to remain seated until the last passenger de-boards, then help comes in with a wheel chair.

The medical insurance. Pls give me some good leads for the same or some consultants in Blore who can do the same. The types of insurance, cost, coverage etc?
Ans: Its totally upto you ABC. But I shall tell you what I heard – Insurance bought form India are not widely accepted here…you would have to pay the bill and claim the amount form the company and stuff. If I were in your position depending on Mums overall health history – I would get an insurance here in the US. Please go to this place for insurance related things – one Narendra (Mod) will help you with a-zs of insurance. Visitor Medical Insurance for USA - InsuBuy Forum

Should I look for some travel companion. IF yes, how to go about. Did anyone find some luck earlier pls share your experiences.?
Ans: Yes you should look for a travel companion. Two ways:
    A) Post in relevant IL forum. Post in Sulekha travel companion forum: See People who are looking for travel companions from Bangalore
I read couple posts there that mentioned they were looking for companion: blore to sfo on 11/14 n 11/24. Like wise you would find and you too post a request there.
    B) Go to the airport 3 hrs early, you would find loads of people wiaitng in the line. Befriend somebody in line and ask them to take care of mum during the journey. Thisis common and they would take care.

B has more chance of you finding somebody. Mum would feel comfortable and not panic, if she has company.

Food inflight. She does not eat outside food (as did not travel much) so can she carry some stuff from home.?
Ans: When booking ticket :did you check Hindu Veg/Non-veg option? if not try your agent and get him to do it. Also, pack in a little box – some roti so she could eat all the way whenever she wants. Als pack some namkeen aisa kuch..agar flight mein ulti ho gayi hain to…

    Instuctions:
    1) Insturct her – how to use toilets and how to lock it form inside.
    2) Instruct her – as to where she could find those packets that you can use to vomit. Also, make her aware that its okay to request for water, juice, an extra blanket should she feel the need for it. Ask her to stretch her legs and walk around when she can – helps blood circulation and prevents legs from swelling.
    3) Hand her a handwritten letter in English – that goes along the lines of ‘I am not so comfortable with the language, lost track please help me with the directions.” phone numbers must be mentioned. or like ‘My Mum cannot speak English, please help her to her flight’ aisa kuch. Agar zarroorat padi hain to kaam ayegi.
    4) Tell her: what happens in the flight from boarding the plain at source till deboarding at destination – including filling those I-94s – she could ask stewardess or co-passengers help. Immigration lines. etcetera.
    5) Luggage: Don’t over pack her hand luggage. Keep it less weighing. Just a blanket, change of dress, any medications, namkeen, passport n document holder, her medical reports, and a sweater. And any imp stuff that you cannot afford losing by placing in those chek in baggages.

    Good Luck. And Safe Travels.

Re: Is it safe for my mom to opt for Wheel chair coming from India to US the first ti

    Hello friends,

How much in advance do we have to book for the wheelchair assistance? Do we have to get any medical certificate or just need to mention about it.

Do we have to give some tips at the airport? If so, how much?

Do they assist even in lifting the baggage from baggage claim and escort all the way to the person who comes for pick up. From which point does exactly does the wheelchair assistance start and end? Do they stop at the restrooms if asked for? Sorry for asking as my mom is travelling for the first time and doesnt know about airports.

Please let me know if there are other concerns as my mom will be travelling alone.

Can someone please post any video links or written text containing wheelchair assistance so tht i can show it to my folks before travelling.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello friends,

Wanted to know if opting wheel chair assistance will make any difference in the port of entry in US. Will the officer stamp less days of duration than 6 months if wheel chair is opted.

Please help if anyone is aware of it.
