Hi Sharadha,

This Chaturthi is different to Ganesh chaturti celebrated by all devotees of Ganeshji in September....Vinayak Chaturti comes every month just like Sankashti.....

Hindu almanac differs from region to region....It depends on the phases of the moon......Hence one cannot be rigid in dates regarding Hindu festivals.....

To be safe, I would say AT falls this year on 7th/8th of May 2008 depending on your region/Panchang (Almanac)

Yeah you are right.. For the tamilians, we follow the pachangam. As per the
panchangam AT falls on 8th May. Like as you say it depends on the Alamanc in your region.

personally i donot have any inclination to buying gold or silver and all so i did not have any idea of such days. also only three years back i came to know abut this term and day. But it poses a question to me..Well the day is auspicious to buy gold or silver and all is okay. but howmany people can afford to buy? is gold affordable for economically backward people at its rocketing price on this particular day? to get good fortunes!

May be to help those people also to get fortunes an alternate has been given it seems..as per sharada's information they can go for salt!!!!

Chennaites can just immagine the usman road and panagal park on may 8 and get prepared to plan your day and route??!! now itself-- not to get squeezed in the crowd that throng aall the jewellary shops located there-- so that you can do your purchase comfortably and conveniently. Good luck to all!!

Even i am planning to buy Gold Bangle for my mom to this Akshya Thiritiya .
Do you know this will serve two purpose.

1. Buying gold ornaments for Akshya Thiritiya
2. To gold Bangle to Mom on Mothersday which is on may 11th.

Many are under the impression that they need to buy gold / silver..Not necessarily ...

Whatever they buy, they would keep buying / getting the whole year..In general people prefer gold cos its an asset which can be thought of buying often..

My question is why only buy? Lets do something good on this AT day which will multiply like giving money / food for orphanages, old age homes etc..Then the good deeds would get multiplied..
