Yesterday I withdrew Rs.1000 from one of the nationalised ATM banks. I counted to see that the amount was correct. There were five hundred rupees notes and one five hundred note.
This morning I took out a one hundred rupee note to give to my grocer. He refused to accept the note stating that it was torn and taped. only then did I notice the tear and tape. to my horror I found that the note which was pretty new was torn in half lengthwise. The horror part is that it was taped all along and the tape had the name of the bank on it. I have to go to the bank to get it changed. Thank God for the name on the tape. Or else I would have to go to the reserve bank to change it.
On an earlier occassion I was asked to go to the reserve bank to exchange a soiled note which another bank had just given me. The Reserve bank clearly states that banks can exchange soiled notes. This instruction is not being followed by any of the nationalised bank. I do not know why the banks circulate such notes instead of withdrawing them. It seems reservebank instructions are only on paper.
