I also live in north NJ. My Tulsiji does not survive at my home due to less sunlight and cold temperature in winter time.so last year I took plant to work since I sit close to window and room temperature never go below 70 degree. This is what Tulsiji need.Perfact temperature and regular sun light. Last year when I brought plant from home to work was just 4 inch long. Right now it is 30 inch long. Only thing it needs regular sunlight. My plant faces west side of window so it gets sun from 1:00 afternoon till 5:00 in evening. Now it has started producing lot of seeds which other people at my work started taking advantage. Growing on their desk. I water every day. and One more thing I talk to my Tulsiji every day. I have seen if I am off from work and when I go day after ,my plant look sad. It will band in sad way. Tulsiji needs constant sunlight, water and your smile.I have never cut my Tulsi and its growing very well.

Thanks for the tips Moumita. I had been trying to grow Tulsi (Krishna and Rama Tulsi) for 5 years but no luck. The max it survives in winters in 1 month.

Once I thought I had luck as it survived winter for 2 months and I started praying to it. It grew up to be Thai Basil and then I used it in my pad thai. My DH laughed his A off.

I too ahve same problem..Infact yesterday i bought a new Tulsi sapling and sowed it..
    From my understanding and experience

    1. Plant Tulsi in Mud pot, not in cement pot
    2.Expose to sunlight
3.Do not keep moving the pot now and then.Keep it permanently in 1 palce
4.Take care no other birds or animals touch it
    5.Use good manure.
    6. FOr any plant, dont use too much manure and dont water too much..
Last thing i beleive is, since Tulsi is considered as Godess, i avoid touching it when i am not clean(before bath for ex) or during my day of the month....

Another thing is, try putting the dried seeds of Tulsi in a new pot.
If the tulsi plant dries off, it will look grey and crisp..just pluck it out compeltely and sow it in a pot..try this...
