Smile Assorted Flowers

Hello IL'ites,

Summer has officially started and flowers are blooming in our garden.

I've attached pictures of some of the flowers and it will be great if all the garden/flower experts out there can give me their names in English or Tamil.

I am a novice in identifying the flowers except for the basic ones like rose, sunflowers, jasmine etc.

In the first picture, I think the pink flowers are Arali Poo (tamil name).
Can anyone please confirm it, and also give the English name for that?

Also, would like to know the name of the Red, Violet and the Purple flowers in the next 2 pictures also.

So..ladies...please help me to figure out the names...

Cheers
Krithika

Dear AC,

Thanks, glad you liked the pictures.

Can you please confirm whether the first picture (pink flowers) are Arali Poo?
They usually bloom only during summer and stops in early fall.
Do you know the English Name for Arali Poo?

Cheers
Krithika

Hi Krithika

None of them look like arali poo ( oleander is the English name). We get a lot of arali, pink, white and maroon that are unaffected by summer or winter. Even the leaves look different.

Hi Usha,

The pink flowers in the first picture..you say they are not Arali? then what is the name of these flowers?

And like clockwork, these plants bloom only in the summer, stop in fall and leaves start shedding, then absolutely no leaves in winter. Then, so cute to see the leaves start sprouting in the spring and only in late spring, buds appear and flowers start blooming in summer. This is the pattern for this plant..guess they are annuals..right..meaning these bloom only during a particular season?

And Usha, weather is totally different from what you experience compared to here. That may also be the reason.

So, can you please identify atleast some of the flowers?

Cheers

The oleander ( arali) never shed their leaves and they bloom thro'out the year. I will post my arali pics and you can see the difference in the leaves and flowers. The middle one could be Zinnia. If there is a nursery near, they might tell you the exact name.

Dear AC,

Thanks for clarifying this and am so happy to get appreciation from an expert like you ! :)

By the way, I am in Eastern zone, here we experience all the 4 seasons distinctly. Winters are very cold, but not much snow except for 4 or 5 days. Summers are hot and humid (just like chennai), autumn, that is fall is cool/cold, winter is very cold and Spring is very pleasant. Weather is not tropical like Florida.

Cheers

Dear Krithika
Perennial are those that appear each year again and again. example a rose.
They do go dormant in winter but will be back in spring.
Annuals are just there for the few months between spring and fall.
example marigold.

The leaves do not look any like the arali plant but the flowers look somewhat similar to me. could be a belonging to the family.

Also in my zone Arali is only seasonal that is late spring to early fall. after which all leaves fall off. And come back to bloom again.
