A nice write up, as usual.
On Kanu day, after keetrafying manjal, we lay out a banana leaf or manjal leaf in the open and serve a feast for the crows and other birds. After circling the leaf with water ( symbolically giving over the food to the birds) we say a small prayer in tamil which has now been shortened to:
Kakkai pidi vacchen ; Kanu pidi vachhen
Kooda piranthavar ellarum enrum nalamaga irukkanum.

Please, can you tell me the full/correct form of this prayer ? Of course, whatever the form, its only the sentiment that counts, still i'd like to know the correct verse.

What you have described is customarly called Kanu Pidi. We pray for our pirandaam & utanpirandhor on that day.
After keeping kanu, we say
காக்காய்ப்பிடி வைத்தேன்; கனுப்பிடி வைத்தேன்;
காக்காயகளுக்கெல்லாம் கல்யாணம், கல்யாணம்.
காக்காய்களின் கூட்டம் போல எங்கள் குடும்பமும் எல்லோரும் ஒர்றுமையாக வாழ வேண்டும்.
The underlying concept is nothing but unity in the family, on both sides, for a woman. We can equate it ti Bhai Dhooj celebrated in North India.
