Let us welcome the Tamil New Year SARVADHARI !

Scriptures declare that each tamil New Year is allotted the name of a deity. It is customary for us to refer to the year by that name instead of a number like 2008, 2009 etc.
This year is called Sarvadhari.
Our new year does not begin at the stroke 0f 12 at midnight like the English new year. It is calculated on the basis of the time when Planet Suryan shifts from one rasi to another. On 13th sunday, at 6.28 PM, Suryan shifts from Meenam to Mesham.This is the time our New Year is born.

In the year Sarvadhari, all people in the Universe will be very happy. People will be friendly with one another without enenmity. The people who govern the country will be interested in improving the welfare of the people.
The new year falls on Ashtami, a favbourite day for Mahalakshmi. So, She should be specially worshipped on
that day for prosperity.
After lighting the lamp, chant the following:

1 - deepo jyotih param brahma deepo jyotih janaardhanaha
deepo harathu me paapam sandhyaa deepo namo(a)stutae

jalae sthalae ae nivasanthu jeevaaha
dhrishtvaa pradeepam na cha janma bhaajo
bhavanthi nithyam svachaahi vipraaha

ஜலே ஸ்தலே ஏ நிவஸந்து ஜீவா:

ஆதியே அடியேன் ஆதரித்து அழைத்தால்
அதெந்துவே என்று அருளாயே !
