Dear Pavi & Sowmi ,
Amazing and awesome dolls ------ fantastic display and so much of hard work . Unless really and truly interested, it will not come out simply superb like this. Well done to you & Your dedicated mummy too !
May the Devi shower her grace and blessings on your family and loved ones , always .

One query-- how did you guys do those splendid padis ?? Is it cream coloured mica sheets ? How did you do that pattu border --- that alone has added so much attraction to the display.

Thanks for sharing your golu with us.
Best regards.

hi janani-thanks for the wishes...

hi kurinji-these padis are made of wood...our carpenter came home n did it..my mother was the one who was instrumental in getting all this done..the padis are painted cream in color and the zari is what we bought this time and stuck to give it a rich finish...

Hi Ladies,

Its been amazing seeing all the beautiful kolu photographs and the equally beautiful ladies who put in so much effort into making it come out just perfect!!

To be honest, I had never heard of kolu before and this is the first time I heard about it...it seems a fascinating tradition and I wish it was there in North India too! My mom and I would have had a great time doing it...

Can anybody tell me something more about it? The origins and meanings of this tradition? And if I want to do this at my home, what all things I need to be careful about?

Thanks a bunch!!

love,
Aarushi

Hi friends,

I am not missing the Golu season. I have visited the Golu of Rajmi, Sowmi, Kutty Kavya and Kriti, Pavitra, Vidya, Subha's in-laws and Subhashini's. Each one has been innovative in different ways. I loved seeing all the kutty girls in pattu pavadais. Pavitra's kolams are so beautiful. And Kavya's sparks of brilliance displayed in her blog and her Golu is very impressive.

Aarushi - Kolu or Golu is a practice of arranging dolls during Navaratri. The dolls are arranged in steps which can be built using planks and tables or can be purchesed from shops. Navaratri being the festival of the Mother Goddess is a time to honor and celebrate womenhood. Women and girls from neighbourhood homes and family friends are invited. So it is a time when women are kept busy visiting each other's homes. They are given small goodies which includes Betal leaves and nuts, coconut, a comb, a small mirror, a kumkum box. Everyday a dish called Sundal is prepared and offered to the Goddess and to the guests. You must have eaten it in Chennai's beach. Visiting guests are encouraged to sing songs in honor of the Mother Goddess. Every home is adorned with colorful rangolis.

Dear Friends,
This evening I went to the residence of one of my "walking friends" !
Their house is a very huge mansion, with a lot of Collectors' items, very aesthetically kept.
She had kept the theme of Surya Bhagavan in His full glory as the main theme. I am posting the photo of the same about 15' high ! The regular kolu was also very beautiful. Please see the photos posted.
Love,
Chithra.
