Inscrutable, indeed, are the ways of God. That alone makes Him what He is. Add to that His attention even to the minute details when He is at His Potter’s wheel churning out His creations. I have no idea if you have as much flair for Geography as I have and if you have, you would also be privy to such information as how the physical features of humans vary from race to race and even region to region. Have you heard that Eskimos have very narrow nostrils as compared to the wide open ones of Blacks? It is so because the former live in extremely cold climate and the air that they breathe in gets heated up as it passes through the narrow passage. But for this small but clever arrangement, the air would freeze his lungs and he would be a goner by the time he takes his tenth breath! On the contrary, the air that a Black, who lives in extremely hot climate, breathes in cools off a bit traveling through the wide expanse of his roomy nose. This arrangement ensures that his lungs get the air at a manageable temperature or they would be on fire in due course of time.
Now, won’t you call it some attention to details? I have just given you two examples knowing fully that you may not have known it. But similar acts of sagacity can be seen in every piece of His creation. Having said all this, I am also constrained to point out that there are areas where He has slipped. I shall just draw your attention to one particular aspect and you will agree that it amounts to lack of planning. It is about the people like us who live in the tropics. The weather in the tropics more particularly in summer tends to be hot and humid and a perfect breeding ground for a condition called itching. There is only one remedy for this condition and it is called scratching. Plenty has been written on itches and scratches and I do not want to dwell on it at length. Itches are caused by several factors as mind-boggling as allergens of which no one has any clue. Itches can strike anyone, anywhere and at any time. When I say anywhere, it is with respect to any place where he may be sojourning at the time it strikes as well as anywhere on his body.
Itches produce all the emotions from A to Z depending on where it strikes. But one sure emotion is an acute feeling of embarrassment if the victim is in a public place when it strikes. Unlike head ache or stomach pain or a cramp which can be easily communicated to others and relief obtained forthwith, itching is a situation that you will have to deal with yourself. If you complain to anyone of itching, he may just look askance at you wondering why you are not scratching it off instead of complaining about it. By mentioning it to him, you may just succeed in passing on your embarrassment to him too instead of getting any relief from him. It is no surprise, therefore, that most people prefer to suffer itching silently and getting it remedied once they are in the privacy of their homes.
But reverting to the main theme of our discussion, I shall concern myself only with the itching caused by the weather. As I have told you before, hot and humid weather produces a lot of itching and by a strange quirk of fate, such itching attacks mostly the remotest parts of the expanse of our back where even the most dexterous hands are unable to reach. If you are as proudly self-reliant as that old man and his wife featured in an Insurance advertisement, who spurn all offers of help as they alight from a train, itching at inaccessible places can be a devastating experience. You can scratch yourself against the wall but not in the full glare of the public. You can roll on the floor scratching like the rolling on the floor emoticon of yahoo but not when someone is watching. External aids can also be helpful only when no one is around. This is where I feel that He has slipped up. He should have provided the people living in the tropics highly flexible hands that can reach any spot on the back. Walls, external aids et al, no doubt, can help in scratching but can they ever give as much satisfaction as one’s own hand? All I can say is, to err is not just human; at times it is Divine too
