Proverbial Tamil Proverbs - Part 12

அன்புடையீர்,
"ஔ" பழமொழிகள் அதிகம் இல்லாததால், "க" விற்குப் போகலாம்.

1 - கஷ்டப்படலாம்; துக்கப்படல் ஆகாது
One can go through misery, but not sorrow.

2 - கனமழை பெய்தாலும் கருங்கல் கரையுமா?
Even if it rains very heavily, a stone cannot melt !

3 - கனவில் கண்ட சோறு பசி தீர்க்குமா?
If you dream of food, hunger will not be satisfied.

4 -கறியிலே கத்தரிக்காய்; உறவிலே சிற்றம்மை
Brinjal is the best of all vegetables; aunt (chithi) is the best of all relatives.

5 - கறக்கிறது நாழிப்பால்; உதைக்கிறது பல்லுப்போக
The cow's yield of milk is low; but the kick is more powerful

6 - கழுவுகிறமீனிலும் நழுவுகிற மீன்
A very smart person who can overcome any tricky situation

7 - கழுத்திலே கருகுமணி இல்லை; பெயர் முத்தாபரணம்
Name & appearance mismatch

8 - கழுத்திலே இருக்கிறது ருத்திராட்சம்
மடியில் இருப்பது கன்னக்கோல்.
Never trust a person by his looks.

9 - கழுத்து மாப்பிள்ளைக்குப் பயப்படாவிட்டாலும்
வயிற்றுப் பிள்ளைக்குப் பயப்படவேண்டும்
One need be scared of the son, not the husband !

10 - கல்லைப் போல் அகமுடையான் இருக்கக் கஞ்சிக்கு அழுவானேன்?
When the husband is alive, why cry for food?

11 - கல்லார் உறவு அகல்; காமக்கடல் கட
Avoid the compaany of uneducated; overcome desire

12 - கல்லிலே நார் உரிப்பது போல
Trying to achieve the impossible

13 - கல்லினுள் தேரையையும் முட்டைக்குள் குஞ்சையும் ஊட்டி வளர்ப்பது யார்?
God looks after everything in the creation

14 - கல்யாணம் என்றால் கிள்ளுக் கீரையா?
It is no joke to enter into marriage

15 - கல்யாணம் பண்ணும் வரையில் பிள்ளை
கண்ணை மூடும் வரையில் பெண்
A son is a son till he gets a wife
A daughter is a daughter till the end of your life

16 - கறுப்பு ஒரு அழகு; காந்தல் ஒரு ருசி
A dark complexion has its own beauty; so does a " slightly burnt dish" its own taste !

17 - காட்டில் எரியும்போது வீட்டில் எரியக்கூடாது
When a family member is dead & the body burning in the ghats, the stove should not burn at home.

18 - கறக்கிற பசுவையும், கைக்குழந்தையையும் கண்ணாரப் பார்க்கவேண்டும்
It is a pleasure to see a milking cow & a newborn baby

19 - கணக்குப் பிள்ளை பெண்சாதி கடுக்கன் போட்டுக் கொண்டால் என்று
காரியக்காரன் பெண்சாதி காதை அறுத்துக் கொண்டாளாம்
Tit for tat

20 - கண்ணே காதே நமஸ்காரம்; கண்டதைக் கேட்டதைச் சொல்லாதே
Act deaf and dumb

I love the 4th, 15th and 18th.

The innocence and sweet looks that a newborn calf or baby carry is such a joy to behold!

The 4th is a very nice one. I have always loved my mother's sisters (chithis), they are more like my elder sisters, you can take so much liberty with them.

We should preach the 15th to people who go to any extreme to have a boy. Good one for Women's lib!!

கழுத்தாம்படையானுக்கு பயப்படவேண்டாம்,
ஆனால் வயத்தம்படையானுக்கு பயப்படணும்.
15- how true nowadays?
20- my mother always used this one.

On 4, I fully agree with you. I had 4 periammas, all elder to my mother. They were so dear to me & infact, most of my old time recipes are theirs ! It is sheer nostalgia !!
