Proverbial Tamil Proverbs - Part 9

இந்த வாரம் "ஐ" பழமொழிகளைப் பார்ப்போம் !

1 - ஐப்பசி மருதாணி அரக்காய்ப் பற்றும்
Mehendi applied in the month of Aippasi gives nice maroon colour

2 - ஐவருக்கும் தேவி; அழியாத பத்தினி
Reference to Panchali - wife of five, but still a chaste woman

3 - ஐயாவுக்கு வித்தையில்லை; அம்மாளுக்கு கர்வம் இல்லை
The man is not very smart; so (rightly) the wife is not very proud !

4 - ஐயர் வரும் வரை அமாவாசை காத்திருக்குமா ?
New moon day will not wait for the purohit's arrival.

5 - ஐம்பது வயசிலே ஆண் பிள்ளைக்கு மறுமகிழ்ச்சி
A man feels (young and) happy all over again when he reaches fifty (??!!)

6 - ஐம்பது வயசு ஆனவனுக்கு அரிவை ஏன் ?
Why does a fifty year old man need a young girl??!!

7 - ஐயா, ஐயா, அம்மா குறை கேழ்வரகும் அரைக்க வரச் சொன்னாள்
Sir, madam wants you to come & complete the rest of the grinding job !

8 - ஐயா கதிர் போல; அம்மா குதிர் போல
Husband is slim; wife is like a barrel

9 - ஐந்தில் வளையாதது ஐம்பதில் வளையாது
Habits die hard

10 - ஐயர் உண்டு தீர்ப்பர்; கர்ணன் கொடுத்து அழிப்பான்
Brahmin lose their money in extravagant food habits;
Karnan loses by giving alms endlessly

11 - ஐம்பது வயசு ஆனவனுக்கு அஞ்சு வயசுப் பெண்ணா ?
Does a fifty year old have a five year old daughter ?

12 - ஐயப் பட்டால் பைய நட
If there is a doubt, proceed slowly.

13 - ஐங்காதம் போனாலும் தன் நிழல் தன்னுடன் தானே வரும் ?
Your shadow will follow you, however far you go.

14 - ஐப்பசி மாசம் அடை மழை; கார்த்திகை மாசம் கடு மழை
It rains heavily in the months of Aippasi & Karthikai

15 - ஐந்தும் மூன்றும் எட்டு; அத்தை மகளைக் கட்டு
Said for the sake of rhyme

16 - ஐந்து வருஷம் கொஞ்சி வளர்; பத்து வருஷம் அடித்து வளர்;
பதினாரு வருஷம் தலைக்கு மேல் பழகி வளர்
Pamper your child till the age of five; discipline him for the next
ten years; after sixteen, treat him like a friend

17 - ஐப்பசி தலை வெள்ளமும், கார்த்திகை கடை வெள்ளமும் கெடுதி
Floods in early Aippasi & late Karthikai are bad.

18 - ஐங்காதம் போவதற்கு அறிமுகம் தேவை
If you plan to trave long, better go with an introduction.

19 -ஐந்து விரலும் ஒன்று போலிருக்குமா?
All five fingers are not similar

20 - ஐப்பசி மாதத்து நடவும் அறுபது பிராயத்திற் பிள்ளையும்
Seeds sown in Aippasi & a son at 60 (serve no purpopse)

Nice ones Chitra...9 and 19 are very familiar to me...learning a lot of new ones here...but I may not get to use them...

The Proverbs (as usual) were very enjoyable. Sorry for late F.B..i was stuck with work yesday:(

Proverb 8 was enjoyable - i saw my hubby giving a naughty smile when i read it aloud.
Proverb 16 is very true - makes us great parents(if we follow it).

It was nice reading the "I" set of proverbs.
I read the 16th one again & again & felt its so true.
Hope I'm disciplining Deepu OR I don't know if its the other way round.
she's ever telling me what to wear, how to tie my hair, etc. etc. etc......
