Proverbial Tamil Proverbs. - Part 1

Dear All,
I have always had a fascination for tamil proverbs and have collected many over the years from all elder members in my family. I am posting a few.
Please let me know if you can read them.

அகத்துப் பிள்ளை ஊட்டுப் பிள்ளை; அடிக்கப் பிள்ளை அசல் வீட்டிலே

அகப்பட்டுக் கொண்டவனுக்கு அஷ்டமத்துச் சனி
ஓடிப்போனவனுக்கு ஒன்பதாம் இடத்தில் குரு

அகப்பைக்குத் தெரியுமா சோற்று ருசி ?

அகமுடையான் இல்லாத புக்ககமும்
அம்மா இல்லாத பிறந்தகமும்

அகமுடையான் பெண்டாட்டியானாலும் அடுப்புக்கட்டி மூணு

அகன்று இருந்தால் நீண்ட உறவு
கிட்ட இருந்தால் முட்டப் பகை

அங்குசம் இல்லாத யானையும் கடிவாளம் இல்லாத குதிரையும் அடங்கா

அங்கும் இருப்பான்; இங்கும் இருப்பான்
ஆக்கின சோற்றுக்குப் பங்கும் இருப்பான்

அங்கும் தப்பி இங்கும் தப்பி அகப்பட்டுக்கொண்டான் தும்மட்டிப்பட்டன்

அசல் அகத்து நெய்யே என் பெண்டாட்டி கையே

அசல் அகத்து பிராமணா பாம்பைப் பிடி
அல்லித்தண்டு போல் குளிர்ந்திருக்கும்

அசல் அகத்து அகமுடையான் ஆபத்துக்கு உதவுவானா?

அசை போட்டு விழுங்குவது மாடு அசையாமல் விழுங்குவது வீடு

அசை போட ஏதாவது இருந்தால் அவனா நகருவான் ?

அஞ்சினவனுக்கு யானை அஞ்சாதவனுக்கு பூனை

அஞ்சு பணம் கொடுத்து அடிக்கச் சொன்னானாம்
பத்து பணம் கொடித்து நிறுத்தச் சொன்னானாம்

அஞ்சு பெண்டாட்டி கட்டியும் அறுக்கப் பெண்டாட்டி இல்லை
பத்து பெண்டாட்டி கட்டியும் படுக்கப் பெண்டாட்டி இல்லை !

அஞ்சு பிள்ளை பெற்றவளுக்குத் தலைச்சன் பிள்ளைக்கரி மருத்துவம் சொன்னாளாம்

அஞ்சு வயசில் அண்ணன் தம்பி பத்து வயசில் பங்காளி

அடுப்பங்கரையே கைலாசம் அகமுடையானே சொர்க்கலோகம்

Chitra, this is quite bizarre ! Your posting is not legible (it's in some unrecognisable font), however I see your sign clearly in tamil which says "Anbudan, Chitra"...

Dear Chitra,

Most of the proverbs were tooooooooooo good ! the one that baffled me was this, how true !
அகன்று இருந்தால் நீண்ட உறவு
கிட்ட இருந்தால் முட்டப் பகை
I am not so great in understanding tamil proverbs....some of them I didn't understand what they meant, but those that I understood, i really enjoyed its inner meaning...!

Keep sharing more ! they are real true collection.

My personal favourite was this :
அகப்பட்டுக் கொண்டவனுக்கு அஷ்டமத்துச் சனி
ஓடிப்போனவனுக்கு ஒன்பதாம் இடத்தில் குரு

Ennachhu ?? I do not know to write in that font to reply you. But I know how to read it and I know most of the proverbs also.
I hope you remember I told you that I studied in Saradha Vidyalaya. T nagar.
till college my language was tamil. But now I can and write malayalam also.

That was a nice list of pazhamozhikal.

True, another feather in your already heavy cap!
I enjoy proverbs, but am bad at remembering them and keep confusing and switching the proverb of one language into another! Like Preethi mentioned, my firefox too wont let me read your Tamil script clearly, but will switch to IE, that will be better to read the font. Keep them coming:)

I am relieved first and then am glad !
My MIL used to quote proverbs at the drop of a hat & believe me, I used to note down every one of them. This time, when I went to Madurai, I collected my mother's collection as well !

That's a good idea of having Monday as Pazhamozhi day, I am for it !

You can start a thread exclusively for this, with one proverb per (mon)day and briefly explain its meaning (I atleast feel translation is needed to fully understand its meaning to enjoy it thoroughly), am sure, funny anectodes or incidents will crop up to some of IL, while associating those pazhamozhi's in their life and can share those with other IL members too in the same forum...This way, Not only we get to know new pazhamozhi's but also have some good incidents shared and we can have fun (as we always do at IL) !

I would like to wait and hear what other IL ladies feel about it, including you !
