Default Oho..

Looks like the Pazhamozhi thread has come alive and is growing fast in the few hours that I was off-line!
Chitra, good idea to make it a weekly thread and a better idea to supply its meaning and significance by small incident narrations or other examples. The not so Tamil proficient readers like me will profit and learn even more. Nice idea from Preethi.

Default Mondays With Chitra

Dear Chitra,

Now Monday would be the Proverbial Day of Proverbs. I enjoyed all the proverbs. (Some of them are quite naughty too)

The one liked the best was "purushan illa pukkamum amma illa puranthamum"

Reading a bunch of proverbs on Monday morning might drive out the Monday Morning Blues.

Good Job Keep it up
sridhar

Default Rest assured, my dear Vidya !

It is a compliment, undoubtedly !
It cannot be and will not be otherwise, since my grandparents also originally belonged to "Kaveri Padukai" ( Thiruvarur, Thiruvaiyaru) & migrated to "Vaigai Padukai".
Love & regards,
Chithra.

Default Sujata, don't be off-line for long !

The growth of this thread only proves that "old is gold" - strictly no reference to my (young) age ! Proverbs are a part of our life. With the use of more English words, we are losing touch with them, sadly !
Instead of my explaining every proverb, let us do it together. Any pazhamozhi's explanation can be asked for & the answer given by any one of the others.
Now, Preethi, start !
Love & regards,
Chithra.

" unprompted" !
Most of our proverbs are naughty ones & that makes them more spicy !
Let me assure you, the one you have quoted is a 100% true proverb - any woman will vouchsafe for it !
Please join us every monday & honour me - now please don't say that you never get Monday Morning Blues !
Love &regards,
Chithra.

What follows is a typical proverb, oft quoted in "namma ooru".
அடியைப் பிடிடா பாரத பட்டா !

மதுரையில் மூட்டை தூக்கச் செங்கல்பட்டில் சும்மாடா ?

You get a support for the weight you carry, only after travelling long, heavy !
It implies, help comes to you very often only at the end of the job. You are often, through it.

Default Chitvish, shall I?

Hello Chitvish,

Thank you for starting this thread on Tamil Proverbs. As usual, you seem to have great acknowledgement of your contributions from many of our ILites. Great going!

Shall I post one of my favorite பழமொழி???

"மாமியார் உடைச்சா மண் சட்டி; மருமகள் உடைச்சா பொன் சட்டி"

I am sure the D-i-Ls of IndusLadies would appreciate this பழமொழி!

Regards,
Induslady

Default My dear Radha V!

I am very happy that you have joined us here. Please ask for the explanation of any proverb, that you do not understand.
Love & regards,
Chithra.

கிடக்கிறது கிடக்கட்டும் கிழவியைத் தூக்கி மணையிலே வை !

The above is my MIL's oft-quoted proverb. It means, first things should come first.
