All of us are going through this dilemma of what to gift. But we prefer to give money only for weddings as the couple could buy whatever they want.

That was a good, candid one! Had a 'deja vu' when I read that part abour your kid opening and discarding the wrapper before you had time to check the tag!

These days, if the person is not too close to you, I feel it is better to stick to 'gift coupons' from stores. For people you know and for kids, it is always a pleasure picking up gifts.
