Rabindra Jayanti

Rabindra Jayanti is celebrated to pay the homage to the great scholar of Kolkata, Rabindra Nath Tagore. Rabindra Jayanti is one of the most locally popular festival of Kolkata. The festival is celebrated on 8th or 9th day of the month May every year. The festival is marked by a number of cultural shows and performances throughout the city of Kolkata.

Rabindra Jayanti has gained a lot of popularity in the state of West Bengal and beyond. The festival provides a platform for the budding artists and literary person, in various cultural shows that are organized in the state during the mentioned dates. Music, skits, dramas, traditional songs and dances are performed in institutes and theatres, followed by the distribution of awards. The festival has become a part of the local culture of Kolkata.

Rabindra Nath Tagore is one of the few Indian personalities to be awarded Nobel Prize. His literary works, including the master piece Gitanjali, has won world wide acclamations. R.N.Tagore is considered as one of the greatest Indian scholars of 20th century. His works reflect a unique blend of Indian poetry and spiritual mysticism. The ideas of great scholarly works produced by Tagore are rooted in the Hindu sacred book Vedas and Upanishads. Through the medium of short stories, novels and theatre, the great scholar was successful to preserve the cultural identity of India.

There is a definite form of music that has been attributed to the cultural icon gaining popularity in the region. The music, called as Rabindra-Sangeet, is a mixture of Indian classic music and popular folklore of Bengal. These performances receive a great attention and accreditation during the festival and the performers receive the patronage. In more simpler terms Rabindra Jayanti is both a test and the celebration of results.

Thanks....
Got lots of information about Rabindra Jayanti..
How did you celebrate Rabindra Jayanti?
For me I am a rabindra sangeet singer.....Being in US I cudnt do much on that Day but when I was in Kolkata I used to participate on different cultural programs held out in the different clubs...Many a time I conducted a Rabindra Sangeet Sandhya(Sandhya means 'evening' in bengali) at my place where I used to invite different singers whom I know and some eminent artists also to come and participate in the program....Many used to recite the poems written by Rabindra natha Tagore...

The best part of those programs were .....all the children who are interested and are into learning courses of singing ....mostly from our locality are invited and I encourage them to sing ,dance and recite ....so that they get the courage to perform in front of many people......

Unfortunately I miss all those out in US.....
I am in the East coast of US....in Stamford,CT....not many rabindra sangeet lovers are found here...very little bengali community.....so Rabindra Jayanti is not celebrated that way.......hope you guys will share your experiences......

My dear Friends,

Lets share some of the pages of Rabindranath Tagore's life.

He was a Bengali poet, Brahimo religionist , visual artist, playwright, novelist, and composer whose works reshaped Bengali literature and music in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He won the "Nobel Prize for Literature" in 1913.

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta into a wealthy and prominent Brahman family. His father was Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, a religious reformer and scholar, his mother Sarada Devi. His grandfather had established a huge financial empire for himself, and financed public projects, such as Calcutta Medical College.

The Tagores were pioneers of the Bengal Renaissance and tried to combine traditional Indian culture with Western ideas. All the children contributed significantly to Bengali literature and culture. Tagore, the youngest of the children, received his early education first from tutors and then at a variety of schools, among them Bengal Academy where he studied Bengali history and culture, and University College, London, where he studied law but left after a year without completing his studies.

The works of Rabindranath Tagore run to 29 large volumes.Tagore wrote thousands of songs, which have become the national music of Bengal. It include national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.
