today is the day all bengalis and ladies who are in kolkata, would buy a small packet of sandesh and a pair of iron bangles, an a packet of sindhoor to be applied on her forehead and visit the pandals near by to give a send off to the mother, as the avahanam from the idol would be removed and all ladies would be allowed to give her sandesh which they will spread on the lips a little and put the bangle on her hand, apply the sindhoor it is saying bye for the year. she is going back to her husbands house, so this send off is known as bijoya, and today the bengalis will have non veg, especially mutton. no non veg for the week no fishes also even the fish market would be deserted during this period the fishermen dont venture to bring the catch as there will be no takers, but from tomorrow all the fish market will be full...so a nice send of to the mother, HAPPY BIJOYA TO ALL, AND VIJAYADASHAMI TO OUR SOUTH INDIAN FRIENDS HERE... SUNKAN

Hi Friends,

This is according to North India. They celeberate Vijayadasami as per Ramayan. Here is the story.

Dusshera also known as Vijaya Dashami, is celebrated on the tenth day of Navaratri. This signifies the victory of Lord Rama over the demon Ravana, which is often observed with special celebrations and the burning of the effigy of Ravana. On that day there is often a huge bonfire in which people burn the effigy of the demon Ravana, which also represents the destruction of the false ego. Thus, it is a festival which shows the process by which humanity can reach the perception of God. It incorporates the means and worship by which one can purify themselves of the ten sins, meaning the sins committed by the ten active senses. It is the process of purification so that one is meant to become free of the dictates of the mind and the temporary world of sense objects, which paves the way for one to enter into the transcendental experience.
What this shows is that all aspects of the Vedic process, whether we are familiar with them or not, are ultimately meant to be a vehicle by which we can transcend the mind, senses, and the temporary material world and enter into the Supreme Reality wherein we can reestablish our lost relationship with the Supreme Being.

thank you, Sunkan for letting us know what happens on the last day of Dusshera, in Calcutta.

Krishnamma, also thanks to you for clearing our doubts about the celebrations in North India, relating to Ramayana.
Because yesterday my daughter received a Dusshera greetings depicting Lord Rama and Ravana, she was asking me about it. I replied that during Deepavali also they celebrate Lord Rama's victory and about Dusshera, i don't know.
Thanks also for making me learn why Ravana had 10 heads and what does that mean.

Dear Sri,

Thank you for your mail. Yes at the time of Deepavali, they will say that is the same day when "Ram, Seetha, Laxman" and all the others came back to Ayodhi and had Pattabishakam. So they all will light 'agal' and decorate their houses with lamps on the Deepavali day.

(We South Indians will light 'agal' on "karthigai')
