picture 2. Notice the shoes with Gerbera daisies.

Picture 3. Can you believe it? It is a lady bending down to pick vegetables, if you notice closely!

Picture 4. Very handy idea when there is less water
Picture 5. moss man fishing???

I can spend hours together in the garden enjoying and doing the hard work as well and not feel spent at all. Now, we all love gardens and gardening so much but I am also sure we all have our pet peeves about it as well. I am starting this thread to get some comfort from the fact that hopefully I am not the only one who feels these things - so help me, share yours too.

I love the feel of dirt on my hands, don't care how bad my nails look at the end of a hard day in the yard and so avoid wearing gardening gloves as much as I can. But come spring, I am horrified of earthworms. They come out in hundreds and I always dread touching them, mushing them while digging and just seeing them wiggle around makes me stop, take a deep breath and resume ofcourse with proper gloves on! Now what gardener does not know the importance of these creatures and who won't feel joy in the fact that these worms are enriching your soil, but here I am still working on this fear of mine!

The other constant source of complaint is my rose bushes - I am lucky to have lovely bushes, I love them and they grow well....more like crazy well (touch wood) and flower well too. But when it is time to prune them down, I cannot help but cry out in pain just thinking about it, forget the actual trimming them down part. Yes, my gloves come in handy here too but I never seem to come out without a few scratches here and there, some branches caught in my hair and some pieces of clothes torn as well.

But it is all the thorns, the triming, the worms, the dirt that makes it all worth while when the garden is in full bloom!

Dear friends,

After seeing so many of your garden pictures could not come back. I love gardening as many of you know from my previous posts.definitely inspiring.

I prepare my own compost and also the soil that goes for the next pot.

But this post is not to talk about the container gardening. but to talk about the benefits of some of the plants that can be easily grown with a little patience and attention to detail. I grow these plants now.

Tulasi - The leaves of this herb are good for building immunity. a few leaves in the drinking water, enhances the taste. the leaves can be chewed raw, they are very much helpful in curbing migraines, reducing fever, helping in increasing the Red blood count. A tea made of this leaf helps in reducing cough and cold.can be grown from the seeds from the plant. you need to prune the plant to allow for good leaves. did you know that there are 4/5 varieties of tulasi. Karunthulasi, Senthulasi, Naithulasi, Nilathulasi, Kalthulasi and Multhulasi.

Curry leaves (kariveppillai) - The leaf that gets thrown out in a feast :rant. this humble leaf is very useful in controlling diabetes, blood pressure. It helps in reducing gastric problems. increases apetite. it is believed that this leaf helps in hair growth. this plant also can be grown from the seeds. people do pour sour buttermilk for a more flavourful leaves.

Vadanaraya leaves ( Delonix elata) - it is grown as shrub in many houses as a decorative plant, as the color of these leaves are so beautiful. This leaf has a heat nature. it is prepared with dhal and taken.
the main benefit of this plant is controlling joint pains, arthiritis and bone related problems and also swellings in knee cap. a weekly intake helps in general helathy. a small branch can be used to grow this plant. i have done it and you can see a few new leaves on the branch.

Aloe vera or the sotrukatrazhai..that was earlier sold as a evil eye evader is a great medicine and a resourceful plant. latest product from aloe vera is a saree (even a ilite has posted details about this somewhere)
the pulp is full of aminoacids and proteins no wonder this is being marketed as a multivitamin syrups, juice. a little of the pulp applied on the skin reduces blemishes, and other skin problems. a little pulp taken in helps in reducing body heat. this herb is used in liver and eye disoders.
our ilite friend satya had given a hair oil using aloevera.

A small bulb is enough to get a good yield. i have a friend who removes the pulp and make a gravy. have not tried it.:hide:

Karpooravalli.: The fleshy leaves have a pungent aroma. the juice of these leaves work as a great expectorant. a tea of the leaves along with tulasi taken regularly reduces the occurence of cold/cough. The juice of this plant, when boiled with gingelly(sesame oil) can be used as externally on the head to reduce cold. apart from this it is used to reduce bees stings. relieves sore throats, breathing problems. Heard that it also has analgesic properties and anti oxidants.
a small stem is enough to propagate a new plant, excess water leads to rotting.

Looking back at my years of gardening is sure a pleasant trail of thought and although I cant say I have a green thumb I feel I do have a green thought.
Whatever flowering plants or vegetables I planted I seem to have tried to get as many varieties as possible of the same kind.
I used to boast that I have fifteen varieties of hibiscus. The usual red, the bundle red(the adukku sembarathai ) the whilte, the pink, the pink and white in the same plant that sometimes flowered half white half pink flowers, the huge corolla deep pink, the yellow with red centre, the large red corolla, the bundle pink, the bundle deep pink, the orange bundle, the orangish red bundle, the red chillie variety and also the pink chillie variety. People who visited our garden used to comment that it looks like hibiscus nandavanam.
Getting plants is a different story altogether. If you have read my write up .. the croc in me … you will understand my trail of thoughts about getting plants.
The drumsticks at our place was huge and measured a little more than a metre. My father in law passed away and the house was full of people. Meeting my mom in law to console their eyes went sideways to look in awe of those huge drumsticks. They would ask the maid, or cousin or us whether they can have a pothu …a part of the stem for planting…and also some drumsticks…!!
On the moneyplant trail…whether money mattered or not…there were a whole lot of moneyplants at our place. I used to put them into heart shaped borders sometime climbing on papaya trees. When the trails went up the papaya tree the leaves were huge and looked like huge corollas of the papaya plant knit closely. People who visited us used to ask how or where we got this variety. Explaining to them that the moneyplant when it grows on some tree such as the papaya has huge leaves, was not accepted by them. When they asked for a twig and I gave them from the bottom they insisted that I give them a twig from the huge climbing leaves…!!
The red earth which is supposed to be good for rose plants and almost all potted plants used to beckon me wherever even when I was traveling in a bus or train and I used to send out silent prayers to come home to my garden.
Mimicking Paari…the king is supposed to have donated his chariot to the trails of jasmine. Well I would do anything like putting the new stool or planting in the brand new bucket or tying up the tendrils to my sons cycle during holidays. I cant seem to express enough when I say the jasmine trails used to swing in a welcoming way whenever I went by that side. Visitors also felt that the jasmine welcomed them …!! Talking of jasmine… we were married because vijay used to bring jasmine from a nearby garden for me to our workplace and wouldn’t take no for a answer.
Jasmine varieties were a dozen the nithyamalli, the gundu malli, the long thin variety, the short round variety, the one set of corolla variety, the jaathi malli white the jaathi malli pink the jaathi malli white small, the ramabanam small the ramabanam large .
The ixora plant was a pleasant addition with red, orange yellow and the fragrant white.
Composting was a greedy passion… greedy because I almost begged borrowed and whatever to get coffee grinds, tea leftovers from tea shops, the goat droppings whatever you call them, the dung from naattu maadu (desi cow) and urine for making panchakavya.
Pruning plants is something I did not like and yet it has to be done to get the new leaves sprout.
Digging the garden composting and watering was a lovely hobby and singing to plants sure brought about immense pleasure that cannot be explained in words.
Do set right my school history….now there was a king who came to India 18 times to get the huge haul of gold and goodies to take back home…? Well this is how I felt when the parijatham refused to take life or flower at our place after a huge plant died after many many years. I bought the seeds the plants , sometimes from the nursery sometimes from friends and relatives. And atlast two came alive.
Come rains and i used to wander on the roadsides looking for tulsi plants. they were all over the place and also the manatakkali. Bringing them home to give a new place was time well spent.
Talking of greens there were a dozen again..and making greens from your own garden is tasty healthy and makes you feel proud.
I had seven varieties of avarakkai…broad beans. Getting the seeds every season and putting them into small covers was a wonderful pastime.
The sanku pushpam blue and white varieties were almost all over my garden and when in flower the whole place had blue and white toppings as the plant climbed all heights..!!
No chemical fertilizers or pesticides in my garden. I chased away the flies with yellow oiled papers. Some with crysanthemums called thulukkajavanthi in tamil. I had powder of mustard, clove and cornflour ready for those ants that kept shifting places. come rains and vijay used to clear the pathways for water to go out and while on that job he used to bring back lots of earthworms for the compost pile.
My garden has been an inspiration for me to write …like house atop trees, the croc in me, the green cascade and red beaks, and a lot more unpublished ones, my garden has been a place where I could experiment with new types grafting, pickling as we had so many varieties of mangoes, sour lime, amla the big and small varieties, cooking greens as we had at least fifteen varieties of greens and need not have to buy greens in the market…
The herb garden…yet another collection and a storehouse for household remedies.
The colourful crotons brought neat pot arrangements and the December cacti type flowers a red glow in 20 pots all in a row.
The month of may had lilies in bloom the red orange and pink. I was always on the look out for the white ones which I still miss.
Butterflies birds atleast twenty varieties including the crow and bees, beetles grasshoppers used to abound and the garden a wonderful place to be in…lazing in the sunshine below the shade of a tree with a book and a pitcher of water in hand…oh what a nice and wonderful way to spend an afternoon

Of course Garden is Heaven. It is a place of creation. We can make our kids , little God.
Gardening is one of the best entertaining and enjoyable activity anyone can get .But how many of us involve our kid in this? That’s really a good question to think over.

Of course Garden is Heaven. It is a place of creation. We can make our kids , little God.
Gardening is one of the best entertaining and enjoyable activity anyone can get .But how many of us involve our kid in this? That’s really a good question to think over.

If u r already involving them, then give a big hand to yourself because u r doing a lot to ur kid and mother earth. If u have not thought about kids and gardening, don't worry. Don't think about mess they would create. Let me also tell you some of the benefits you get.Hope that will help u to jump into it. It is never too late to start.
* Garden is the best place where u can teach ur kids about life and care for others. Just look at them take great care in growing a plant. Is it not the right place to teach them how to be kind?
* Gardening involves a lot of organising skills. You have to first prepare the garden bed, select the best seeds, give the necessities - sunlight, water, air, soil properly, weeding and then harvesting. This guides them to keep them organised to get better yield.
* Nowadays even kindergarten kids are having lots of homework and lots of stress. I always wonder how they r going to cope up with this. Gardening obviously gives relaxation to anyone of any age group.
* One more thing is when we do gardening with our kids, we get more time to be with them. Quality time with the family. At the same time, we r involved in something, so we will not be busy advising on anything. We can sure have a friendly talk because our mind is relaxed.
* The most important thing is that we can get a more greener Earth. And of course, fresh air in our surroundings.
* Sometimes it even helps a fussy eater's mother. Any kid will love to eat anything grown by them.
* It is also a physical activity. Nowadays kids are mostly in front of TV. Though some are educational programs, they r deprived of physical activity. This will help to overcome obesity in kids, a common problem now.

So I think everybody should think of making gardening as ur kids' activity. You can also list more.

Having spoken about the benefits, lets now think of how to attract our kids to gardening. That’s the challenge. They should not be discouraged by the amount of work required for a good garden. So how to make them enjoy it. If anybody has any helpful tips, pls share it here. It would help many of us.

To start with :

When you are starting a new garden with ur kid, make sure the plants you choose grow quickly otherwise your children might lose interest. For example radishes, lettuce, bachelor buttons and sunflowers .
