Dear Friends,

We are planning to move to Madurai next year. We are in the very initial stage, and yet to make the final decision. However, we would like to look at the schooling option in Madurai. I know the city is going through a tremondous change and lot of developments. There are plenty of new schools in the city. My kid is currently in CBSE syllabus and does not know Tamil (Hindi is his second language).

Would you gals throw some light on this and suggest some good school and help us out in this process. There are lots of Matricuation boards, CBSE, ICSE schools in Madurai. Not sure about the IGCSE/IB though.

I have in my list Jeevana (CBSE), VMJ (ICSE), Vellammal (CBSE), TVS Lakshmi.... so far. Our main priority is to have a school which has a friendly atomosphere, good academics, loads of activities/sports, excellent communication skills (Some of the schools in Madurai used to have very poor spoken English - during my times, don't know how is it now). And is it mandatory for all the students to have Tamil as a second language? or can he/she choose hindi instead. Kindly advice.

Thanks for all your help in advance.:-)

Hi Ladies,

I live in Scotland for nearly 10 years. My boys are 11 and 9. I am planning to move to India preferably Chennai or Madurai in the next academic year. Found this link accidently and very very helpful and I am gaining more confident in moving as well, as I read the threads. Well done Ladies. Let me tell you my problem. I have no parents or in-law committment to come to India, I come purely for Indian exposure. Recently my husband is registered for his higher studies and will be committed to live in UK for next 3 years. So, I have to move to India and live with children all by myself. I am very scared for not knowing the unknowns. Is there any safe areas to live in chennai?. Again I have to look at the schools in that chosen safe area(if any exist). Is it manageable to both work(part time) and taking care of children.

Is there any NRI living alone with children with same experience.

many thanks
Malathy

I think its only for time pass. we never know who the person on the other side is. they may come in girls name to chat and have fun. but what about the other side. if they dont believe and take it easy thats ok. otherwise, it really leads to big probs.

and also there are net lovers. without seeing each other, just by chatting esp girls are asking troubles by themselves.

now a days school students have started these things. i just want to say to parents to be careful and keep an eye on their kids as to how they are using the internet.

pour in your valuable suggestions so that it helps others also from this!

Ladies,

I have a 4-year old who goes to a pre-school. He recently moved to this class (2 months back) from the 3's class. Recently his teacher always tells me that he is distracted during language and arts time (when they do coloring, tracing, writing etc). They have a set time to do this, 30 minutes or so and apparently he either does not want to do it or is very distracted when the other kids are doing the classwork. The result is that his worksheet is always incomplete.

They are not too academically focused so the school and teacher do not make a big deal out of it, but the teacher is trying to get them into a classroom routine and doing classwork since they go to kindergarten next year.

I know coloring and writing is not his favorite, but he does know how to do it, when he wants to. The teacher says he is very good at other activities like circle time where they read books. He is very good at reading and generally comprehending things.

We do not do much coloring or writing at home, since I work and he goes to the preschool/daycare fulltime, so when he is at home he plays or just hangs out with us. Also when he plays with his cars (favorite activity) he can play for a long time, so it is not like he is always distracted

Should I be worried about his distractability? Any tips? We talk a lot about how he is a "big kid" now and how he needs to learn to do classwork during classwork time. Sometimes it works, sometimes not...

:hiya All,

Whenever I go to volunteer in the classroom, go to have lunch with my dd who is 6 now, she just acts as if I am invisible to her. Even when I go near her and sit and try to talk she just answers my questions to the point...yes or no. She is not like that at home. When I later ask her she says she didn't have anything to talk to me in the class/cafeteria. I tell her that some of the kids hug and kiss their moms when they see them. To this she says she too does that at home and in school you should not be doing that. When she returns from school and after her snack I ask her "tell me what all you did at school" . To this she says "nothing"!!! :bonk
I don't feel so bad but then I wonder why she is like that. Generally, she is not a introvert. She talks a lot but only at home. She plays, fights and does everything a normal child does with her older sibling. Her teacher has a very good opinion of her. All my friends say she is very well-behaved with them when I am not there too. But at school my big huge person standing right in front of her is invisible.

Do your kids do the same when they see you at school ? Was wondering how your kids react when they see you at school.
