Kasuti embroidery belongs to Mysore district of Karnataka state( Dharwar region ) situated on Western Southern part of India. It is a highly developed embroidery, representing the art and culture of the Karnataka, its spiritual urge and aesthetic sensibility. This embroidery is done by housewives in the part of Maharashtra and Karnataka, who make use of very simple stitchery.The geometric designs of Kasuti are derived from the temple sculptures. They depict bells, chariots birds & animals.

Traditional Kasuti has four types of stitches- Ganti, Muragi, Neygi and Menthe

Menthe-which means knot, zig zag, weave and fenugreek seed.this is the regular cross stitch. The name is derived from the word ‘fenugreek seeds’ in Kannada.

Neygi- went out of hand work as the modern weaving techniques can produce woven butis and other designs in the loom itself.This is an ordinary running or darning stitch, it has an all over effect of a woven design. The name comes from the word “ney” which means to weave in Kannada.

Murgi -is the most admired and the most difficult stitch of the four. appears like steps of a ladder, the design appears same from both sides of the fabric, the distance between two stitches is the same and looks quite like the gavanti.

Ganti/Gavanti -is a double running stitch, the name is derived from the word gaonti which means knot. The design appears identical on both sides. Patterns are mostly geometric, stitches are worked in vertical, horizontal or diagonal directions only.

Kasuti remains Karnataka's pride and joy and rightly so. Its popularity is unlikely to wane in many years to come. The reason is plain to see, it is at once elegant, beautiful, traditional, and ageless in its charm.
