Does anybody know about Medical Transcription course? Has the course started in India?Is it worth doing MT ? Any information would be helpful.

Hi Priyanka,

I think there is a MT course in Coimbatore. I understand it is professionally and financially satisying.

Indusladies has atleast two MTs- Jaya and Varudhini.

Jaya has posted some articles on health (not MT courses)- you shld get it in our archives.

I hope Varudhini sees this post and answers. She is very helpful.

I am Varudhini. I just saw your post. Have you had any preliminary knowledge of medical transcription?. Anyway, as so many people are interested in this I am giving what and what of MT.

What is Medical Transcription

Medical Transcription is the process whereby voice dictation is converted to a typewritten (hard copy or electronic) format.

Each day in hospitals all over the country, thousands of patients are admitted and discharged. Examinations are conducted, procedures are performed and recommendations are made. It is not uncommon for multiple physicians to be involved in a simple procedure for a single patient. Radiologists, Pathologists, Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, and a host of other medical specialists must all coordinate their efforts to ensure that patient care is both adequate and appropriate.

Underpinning all of these activities is a complex web of medical and patient information. Each patient-related activity and procedure must be meticulously documented and then added to the patient's permanent record. Over time, all of this information accumulates in a centralized medical records repository where it serves as a critical resource for patient care - facilitating accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatments. Indeed, timely patient care often hinges on the ability of Radiology, Pathology, and other specialty departments to quickly conduct their examinations and report their findings.

Verbal dictation is by far the most common method for documenting and reporting the results of examinations and procedures. Physicians generally use either a cassette based voice dictation system or a digital voice dictation system to record their findings. Dictating reports verbally not only allows physicians to be more thorough in their reporting, it also saves them a great deal of time.

The process of converting this voice dictation to a typewritten format is known as transcription.

Skills and experience required:

Any graduate can enter into this field. Some prerequisites are

1) Excellent command of the English language and solid grammar and spelling skills.

2) Solid typing skills.

3) Good judgment.

4) Ability to concentrate and decipher marginally intelligible dictation and interpret varied dialects, accents and speech patterns.

5) Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

6) Access to, familiarity with, and ability to use appropriate medical reference material efficiently.

7) Proficiency with appropriate word-processing hardware and software and transcription equipment.

Advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, systems, diagnoses, and a familiarity with terminology specific to a variety of medical specialties.

The last three we can learn while taking training.

There are a number of excellent companies in India that are offering training and job placement also. It is important to select a good company for training. It is better to select a company that gives training without any fee. There are certain companies that charges for training and better not to trust them as they may not give you the guarantee of placement after completion of training.

Some renowned companies in India (only to name a few) Acusis, Focus, Spryance, Worldtech, Seekar, Karvy (these companies offer home based jobs also).

There are so many local companies.

After successful completion of training they will take us into production. This will mainly depend upon our abilities and the skills. This may take as short as from two months to as long as till you achieve competence.

Work from home:

After a minimum of two years in-house work experience and after you are confident enough that you can handle work from home without any body's help you can work from home. There are so many companies that are offering home based medical transcription.


Method of payment:

For in-house employees the salaries will be based on the experience and proficiency. For newly trained ones the starting salary would be a minimum of 8,000 and then on yearly increments based on the performances.

For home based MTs, the rates and method of payment will vary from company to company. Increasingly, transcription companies are paying on a production basis. The amount of money you make will be determined by your speed and proficiency. Generally for home based MTs they will pay by line count basis.

I live in Dubai. I have no background in medical, but very much interested. I was trying for an online course but I did not find. Even if I get an online or some type of distance learning, is it good?
Or doing a regular course is better?

There is no need of medical background to be an MT. Regarding online training, I do not have any idea. While selecting such ones you have to be very careful on their credentials. Our fellow ilite Teja is also looking for online training, so she can help you.
