Though I am not in a situation to debate with you as you have had enough experience in life, infact Your experience as DIL plus one year is my age.
Every situation with MIL has its own prominance and requires its own kind of handling. In MIL's prospective,Nothing should be taken for granted like Mom. Though we dont take it for granted, but always she shouldn't behave as somebody on our neck.
I will become an MIL after some years, but I dont try to nag or interfere in their lives. Its one of the lessons learnt with experience!
If MIL's interference is reduced in son's lives after marriage, I think 80% of the issues are resolved. Only 20% can be adjusted by DILs as they have done a great sacrifice by not interfering in son's lives.

the irony is that the roles these women play have no overlap... and they could happily coexist and share the attention of the male... (of course there is a strong connection- one gave birth to him, other gives birth to his children...one was the home maker when he was growing up, the other plays this part when his kids are growing up...)
