Default Cleanliness

Hello Lades,

How are you all doing? Well, this question has been nagging my mind and i wanted to know all of your opinions.

Do you all still follow pathu and yechal? I grew up with my grandmom and she strictly used o follow it. Though we complain scientifically it signifies cleanliness.

Now me being here in the USA i don't follow pathu religiously but i make sure that i don't mix yechal.

Give me your take on it

Winnie

hi winnie,

i am also doing the same

my mom used to follow it. but she didn't insist me to do. so i am not following pathu and don't mix yechal. sometimes i would fight with my mom for that one thing 'pathu'.

regards
vibusha

Pathu means the one that you added salt and cooked in stove.

Yechal means the ones from where you have eaten from.

There's a saying in Tamil, "Pathu parakkadikkum, echal erakkadikkum".

In olden times, for sanity reasons they followed these because there was no fridge in those days. You are not supposed to touch anything that's pathu and touch a non-pathu item. You can touch anything with yechal hand etc.

I follow pathu when I go to India as both my MIL and mom are specific about it.

Yechal I follow in even our home but to certain extent. Like we still keep curd or pickle on our table whereas in my MIL's house we are supposed to carry them in small kinnams or cups or plate to the eating place. I don't think I can do all those here but try to follow it atleast as much as I can especially for neivedyams and poojas.

Hi,
food items like sambhar, rice, rasam, dosa idli etc are pathu. They are kept in a particular place in the kitchen. Poori, chapathi are not pathu. Pathu items should not mix with non-pathu items like curd, ghee, pickles etc.
Yechal is, when we eat we are not to touch anything with the hand we are using to eat. And nothing should be touching the plates from which one eats. One is not to share things from one's plates after starting to eat-only spouses can share yechal.
One funny thing which happened many years ago in my house. My maternal uncle's son was living at our house. He is not much into these things since he lived in the North India and had no idea about all these. One day, he touched the paruppu podi container with his yechal hand. So only he had to finish that paruppu podi and it was kept separately in a corner of the kitchen. He tried to eat for some days and then got fed up of it and we threw it out. We still make fun of him about this.
