I too had the same problem and my neighbour suggested the below procedure:

She asked me to use a dish washing detergent. Take few drops in two cups of warm water , soak a white cotton cloth in this solution and lay it over the stain, place a iron and set it low First, you need Dawn dish washing detergent - the original blue type. Put five drops in two cups of warm water. Moisten a white cotton cloth with this solution and lay it over the stain. Place a clothes iron on it, set on "low". Leave it for few minutes, dont press down, the stain would being to wick up into the cloth...repeat this process with new cloth to get the entire stain out...

But then this process was time consuming and was too much effort...and i was not satisfied with the output too...

You know what really worked out for me?? this might sound silly, but then a little of colgate tooth paste did the wonders.....

    Thanks again.

Just take a old cloth. Squeee some toothpaste on it and rub it nicely on the stain.
You have a scrub nicely. and then you can take some water in a mug and use the cloth to remove the paste from the carpet.
    This works for kumkum stain.
