The next verse is a contrast to the previous verse and shows the state of the man who is realised and at the same time provides insight into the process of realisation through knowledge of the three gunas.
Here the Lord explains why the wise are not attached to the karma.

    Thathvaviththu mahabahO guNakarmavibhagayO:
GuNaa guNeshu varthantha ithi mathva na sanjatje 2.28

One who has true insight into the modes of the mind and the actions precipitated by them, understanding that Gunas as "sense-organs" move among gunas as "objects"- he no longer gets attached to them.

A child may play with a balloon; the child's father may also play. When the balloon bursts, the child cries, the father roars with laughter; the child plays in "ignorance", while the father plays with the knowledge of the perishable nature of the balloon; he knew this would happen at any time.

Similarly, the wise man knows fully well that the gunas as "sense-organs" play among the gunas as "sense-objects". The vasanas in us determine both our equipments of enjoyment and the objects of enjoyment.
So, he who realises this truth is never caught in the infatuation of the world game (na sanjatje ).

In the next verse, the Lord warns the enlightened man not to thrust his understanding of life upon the unenlightened.

    PrakrtherguNa sammoodaa: sanjanthe guNakarmasu
    ThanakrithsnavidO mandankrthsnvinna vichalayeth 2.29

Those who are completely deluded by the modes of their mind (guNas) remain attached to these gunas and their actions; the man of perfect knowledge should not unsettle the people of dull wit and imperfect knowledge.

Now, let us recapitulate the main points of the arguments:
1 – At least for the guidance of the world every educated and cultured man must dynamically act in the fields of selfless service.
2 – The Lord has no duty to perform, yet He does work to keep the world in order.
3 – A wise man should in no way discourage others from the performance of the duties by renouncing actions himself or by calling upon men to do so. On the other hand, the wise man should perform all duties himself and encourage and inspire all others in the community to do so.
4 – A man of wisdom should never unsettle men attached to vigorous activity by a sudden renunciation of all their duties.

    Love,
    Chithra.

Somnambulism is a sleep disorder in which the patient engages in activities that are normally performed while awake. When he wakes up from his sleep, he will not remember anything that he did when he was sleeping. It is not as if he is unconscious while he is sleepwalking. It is just that he is not conscious on that level at which his memory can recall whatever he does during his sleepwalking. Experts say that it is dangerous to wake a sleepwalker during a sleepwalking episode because of the possibility of psychological crash arising out of the sudden confrontation between the conscious and the subconscious states.

We all go through the motions of life like a sleepwalker. We do not understand that we are actually sleeping in our wakeful state. This is what Zuang Tzu, the great Chinese Philosopher of the 4th Century BC, says of our life:
“Fools regard themselves as awake now- so personal is their knowledge! It may be a prince or it may be as a herdsman, but so cock-sure of themselves!”
Whatever we do without understanding the nature of the Self amounts to only sleepwalking. The call of great people like Swami Vivekananda to ‘Arise, Awake’ is meant only to awaken us from the sleep of our mundane existence and make us alive to the role that we need to play as part of the Divine Scheme. Our vedic scholars of yore have reminded us time and again that Karma never dispels ignorance, being under the same category with it. Knowledge alone dispels ignorance, just as light alone dispels darkness.

The Lord’s warning that “the enlightened man should not thrust his understanding of life upon the unenlightened” must be understood in the context of our existence being in the nature of a sleepwalker. The message here is that our Karma represents the combined effect of all our past actions and has to be expended. No one should be stopped from it but should be shown the way to expend the Karma in such a way that our actions of expending our Karma do not add to the ‘Karmic’ balance. Let us take the case of Bagwan Ramana Maharshi. His is a rare case of ‘instant liberation’ and yet he let his body suffer the effects of his residual Karma. His affliction with malignant tumour and the consequent pain and agony that he suffered was only to show us that out Karma has to be understood and endured in a state of enlightenment. He has shown through an incident in his life how the Karma has to be expended. Once while he was taking his walk, he inadvertently trampled upon an anthill and disturbed the peace of the ants. The angry ants started attacking him in retaliation and Ramana stood there with a smiling face until the ants could finish their act of revenge. His feet became swollen beyond recognition. He explained to his agitated followers that by letting the disturbed ants punish him he had ensured against further accumulation to his Karmic account. This is a simple and beautiful example of expending the Karma in a state of enlightenment.

The Lord clearly enunciates in these verses that it is essential that in the process of imparting his knowledge to the unenlightened, the enlightened man should not interfere with the operation of Karma. His job is to enable the unenlightened to understand their life in the context of the Divine Plan. Let us remember that
“wherefore, in the eternal justice, such sight as your earth receives is engulfed, like the eye in the sea; for though from the shore it can see the bottom, in the ocean it cannot see it; yet the bottom is there nonetheless but the depth hides it”
The purer our heart is, the greater will be the depth of the Divine Justice we can see. We may not be able to understand the cosmic process in its entirety but we’ll get an insight into its principles and nature.

    My Dear Gita Gurus,

Many a time, we come across people who try to force their view points on others. It is like "casting pearls before a pig".

This is so apt as the enlightened think they have the capacity to change the world thus falling into the whirlpool of Ego. This in turn leads to their own destruction.

Dear Chithraji, the Supreme Lord anticipated the rise of "God men" & new deities in the ages to come. Just so that the "enlightened" ones do not fall into the trap of ego, he gives this warning.

All are not the same. People differ in their intellectual capabilities.

Dear Cheeniyaji, Sun Yat Sen a great thinker from China said that some people are born to lead & some to obey. So is the case of spiritual advancement.

Not all of us can be a Shri Adi Shankaracharyaji. This trait of not forcing teachings on people is a common trait of all great souls.

They all led by examples rather than mere teaching.

    Regards,

    Corallux

    Dear C&C

Many times in our lives, we think we "know better" - hence take other people's viewpoints for granted. More often than not, the ones who are soft and submissive by nature are the ones affected by getting "run down" by the more outspoken ones. Just the right amount of advice is good enough for others - not interference. That is why perhaps they say "Ask and it shall be give...seek and you shall receive it".

But, even the other extreme, that of keeping mum, when we could have spoken out / shared thoughts genuinely, is bad. I am particularly wary of those who just don't speak out or who always seem 'very casual and playful', but are silent achievers in the end :) ;-) They do have a negative influence on those around them.

And then there are those, who misguide instead of guiding! The less said about this category of folks, the better !

Our life is defined by the varieties of people we meet and at the end of the day, we cannot always rely on someone else to keep telling us what to do, when to do, how to do. When one's conscience and sense of duty are clear and if we have belief in God, we automatically do the right thing and there is nothing to fear.

Thanks for your beautiful write-ups and please keep them coming.
    With love
    Your IL disciple
    Pavithra

    Dear Lux,
The dull-witted ones are unconsciously victimised by their own mental impressions & act in the world outside shackled by many, many burning attachments. But at this stage a sage or a God-man should not enter his life and decry all his actions! He should carefully guide his flow into the right channel whrein, life will reach cultural development for thie individual as well as society.
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Pavi,
Your classification is very interesting and right as well.
A person should not be told not to work or that working for money is useless. Let the person work; otherwise, he or she will become azy. Such people will end up at our door, asking for money!!
Tell them, teach them to make money, but, by following dharmic methods only.
But when you talk to a person who has seen that money is not an end in itself or if he has viveka, you can talk to him about karma yoga.
Krishna only says, a person should not be disturbed unnecessaily!
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Dear Chithra,
The explanation on treating Gunas by the enlightened and theun enlightened was superb. The ballon example was very apt and made a perfect understanding. Many of us do not realise that we just playing with a perishable body and our stay is short lived. We give more importance to the external perishable beauty rather than the soul.

The second verse where in Krishna explains about not thrusting the knowledge totally on the unenlightened is well understood. Many of the people often do not consider the listener as a "beginer",but talk greek and latin about their area of expertise, making the session very uncomfortable. They force their ideas and principles.

    Gret lesson.Thankyou.

    Dear Sri,
Your explanation on "sleep" the internal sleep was too good.
We all sleep for so long and once the realisation comes in we find that there is no time left for it and repent. The Abirami Anandhahi verse "Dhanam Tharum" wherein -asking for Thalarvilla manam, Nenjil vanjam illa enam - are to be relished. But we ask God for all perishble things like clothes, food, Money etc.We seldom ask god for Gnanam to realise "him".

Quoting of Ramana Maharishi's example was great.Absolutely, everyone has to go through the Karma phase and not add up the list.Teach the man to fish rather than giving away a fish to eat, but do not disturb the man's actions(karma) is the lesson learnt.

    Thankyou for the wonderful post.

    Dear Corallux
You are absolutely right. Intolerance is the hallmark of the modern leaders, be they religious or political. Everyone thinks he is right and wants his teachings followed. That is why there is so much of turmoil all around us.In the case of great souls like Adi Sankara, they simply won over people by their own example. He was the reason for Buddhism not finding many takers in India where the Buddhism had its roots. Sankara never advocated torching of Buddhist population but he won them over by the sheer depth of his arguments. The religious fanatics today lack an in depth knowledge of their own religion and consequently resort to terrorist methods to subdue their antagonists.

    Dear Pavithra
That is a very interesting classification. I agree with you that extra caution is required when we deal with 'silent' people. People may not open their mouth for several reasons. They may not be entirely in agreement with you. They may know you are wrong and yet would prefer to keep silent because they may not like to enter into an argument. Or they may know you are right but would hate to admit it. Whichever way we look at it, it is more difficult to deal with them! You are right that they are a negative influence on others. Worse still is when their silence is described as 'diplomatic' There is no such nonsense as 'diplomatic silence'!
