| Hi All! I heard on the SUN news that the colleges in Chennai have introduced a dress code. Is that a good move? Are all the over 40's saying "YES!" and under 25's saying "NO!"? I work in a college in London and there is no dress code. Sometimes it is truly disgusting to see how the youngsters dress - especially in the summer. Many of the male lecturers have commented on how they cannot look at some of the students when talking to them because of low cleavage/hipster jeans/skimpy and tight tops. Are sarees really "out" as college attire? Vasu |

| Hi all, I have been out of college in 2005 and believe me, my college did follow strict dress codes.....most of the engineering college did at point of time itself...........gals were not allowed to wear sleeveless salwars and jeans pants with long kurtis............we should wear only normal salwars with dupattas............. i think most of the problem in today's modern world be it college or work is the attire that women wear.............. i know there must be many who dont agree with this and complain about the view of men being very bad........but isnt it our duty to cover ourselves and go around with dignity.............. for many i may sound like a avvaiyar at 23, but believe me, my other boy friends and colleagues do respect me for the dress I wear and the way i carry myself........... i have been appreciated alot by my friends for the way i mix n match clothes that are modern and yet decent............... so again i go with the government for the dress code....................

| Hi, It is wonderful to bring in the dress code in Chennai colleges. Any dress if worn decently should be alright...we can still look good and presentable in jeans and top. Anyday salwar kameez will be good in our Indian colleges..better than sarees in terms of comfort and exposure. Cheers Krithika |

| Hi, Yes, I feel a dress code is very necessary. That too in educational institutions, it is necessary o dress appropriately. Introducing dress code is nothing but a part of the discipline system. Youngsters may fret and fume now, but they would definetly understand at some part of their life.

| Hi, A dress code is defenitely required for all educational institutions in india. I prefer a unifrom even in college. It makes all the students unique. I did my graduation in a women's only college. Even then i have felt many times that they should implement unifrom system atleast once or twice a week because of the way the girls dress up. Luv and prayers always......... divya |

| hi friend... thanx a lot... actually i had a thought abt opening tis topic... but waited how to start... thanx a lot for ur start... ya me too agree tht dress codes is a must... n strictly to be followed... many people have a deep misunderstanding between MODERNIZATION & WESTERNIZATION .... "when u r in india... try to be an indian" its not the modern dresses, trendy dress... gonna show one's status r whatever it is... but its all ur character, behaviour, attitude... matters n speaks a lot... i passed my college in the yr2004....but though the college followed a strict rule... i have seen many girls wearing their dhupata jus for their neck....with very low cut tops... i'm really startled... wont their parents insists on tis....wont their friends ... tell thm.... we r not an exhibition for guys to njoy... but to be respected among the society......... cheers...!!!:) ashu |

| This is a nice topic. I have just passed out in 2007 from a girls college in chennai. I think my college was the only one girls college in the city to have a dress code. I studied at MOP Vaishnav. Our dress code was simple. No Sleeveless, No T or Polo neck shirts, No Skirts below knee length. Jeans allowed. But Kurtis should cover the front zip and back pocket. If a girl comes out of dress code, our student council members used to call them, give them a black colour long kurti to wear. She has to wear tht for the day, and then bring it washed the next day. We had regular ethinic day, saree day, traditional day, denim day, bandana day, retro day etc etc celebrations. So, by the end of college, we had worn all kinds of clothes - of course within the dress codes specified. I am not aware of the dress code implementaton by Govt. I know that the engineering colleges are very strict, and in a way, it is fine!

| Hi Archana, Your info is really interesting - having different theme days takes the "force" out of dress code. I am really encouraged by so many people thinking it is a good thing to have a dress code. I too feel the same - especially as I am seeing the effects of a "free-for-all" every day! It is really heart-warming that Chennai is making an effort to balance the culture. Youngsters are pulled towards Western fashions, mainly due to cinema and media. Hope this initiative makes them equally proud of the Indian fashion. Vasu |
