It is really heart-warming that Chennai is making an effort to balance the culture. Youngsters are pulled towards Western fashions, mainly due to cinema and media. Hope this initiative makes them equally proud of the Indian fashion.

Hey Vasu

Sure it does. most of us never felt a force of dress codes in college. Also, on saturdays there were no dress codes ( Although we never worked saturdays regualrly). And about chennai making a effort, sure a commendable one and although it is on a small scale, it is makin a differnce

Hi,

I too agree with the dress code issue.

Though some youngsters get angry with this, one day they will understand that these actions taken, are only for their benefits.

But my kids think otherwise. They say that they cant be expected to show up for work in casuals. Hence college life is the only time where they can have relaxed (but decent) dress code.

Cheers,
Lakshmi.

Dear vasu,

very happy to hear the news. You are talking about london, where they don't give preference to dress codes. There atleast they have excuse because the culture is entirely diff.Just imagine our case here,it is horrible.I had my edu. in famous college at chennai. our princi used to send back the girls home for not wearing proper dresses.THis was in 1995.But imagine now, after 13 years,it is more worse here.girls don't bother about what others think and see.
IN my area one big school is there.on annual days, they allow colour dresses.some of the school girls, come wearing horrible dresses.Boys would sit on the walls (school boys with the local guys) and take photos from their mobiles.
One day i saw this and made a complaint and from that day boys were not allowed to sit after school hours.Bad guys will always be bad for all reasons, but that is sep issue. These girls could avoid these unwanted things in their life by wearing proper dresses.THey all compare them with the foreigners.BUt this is india, we still have
respect for our culture.

very very happy to know the news.

Is that a good move?

Are all the over 40's saying "YES!" and under 25's saying "NO!"?

I work in a college in London and there is no dress code. Sometimes it is truly disgusting to see how the youngsters dress - especially in the summer. Many of the male lecturers have commented on how they cannot look at some of the students when talking to them because of low cleavage/hipster jeans/skimpy and tight tops.

Are sarees really "out" as college attire?

hi all,

i go with preetho, s, dress code should be mandatory one.In our college also it is very strict, not even jeans allowed . i did my college in cbe..... i feel jeans can be allowed with long kurtis and salwars with neat dupatta.

AS one of the friend told, girls r confusing themselves with modern and western....we can wear even salwars attractive.

As for as saree is considered,it can be wored on some functions or a day in month.

regards,
Uma

hi,
dress code in college is good...
i studied at REC trichy passed out in 2001, one of my friends was very modern...she is a very nice and beautiful girl with modern ideas abt dressing, she used to wear plunging necklines and tranparent shirts with tank top inside....it suited her well and she looks classy in them...but i've seen even some of the nicest boys in my class exchanging looks and shady comments secretly behind her back...i used to feel so bad for her....i know that these men will anyways make comments no matter what we wear..but atleast we can reduce the chances by enforcing a dress code...and young girls wont have the dilemma what to wear to college..

Hi,

I feel different about enforcing dress codes. I did my UG in a place that had no dress codes. I used to wear jeans, t-shirts, shirts and salwars to college. I refrained from skirts though. I feel it is all in knowing what one's limit is. I've been very good(sometimes best)friends with a lot of boys from my batch and this is what they have to say - "We have seen you and some other girls wear similar dresses. Though the dress is the same, you dress decently whereas some don't. It has never crossed our minds to comment about the way you dress". I am not blowing my trumpet here, but just emphasizing a fact that it is upto us how we portray ourselves. If sarees and salwars mean dress codes, then what will they do if girls wear the most transparent sarees, plunging necklines and the tightest fitting salwars? Will they resort to the burqah? Dress code or not, at the end of the day it is all about how we want to be perceived. This is my

Regards,
Anitha

Hi..
Im really happy to hear that chennai colleges have come forward atleast now to have dress code for students.. I was working as a Lecturer when I was in chennai.. in one of the most popular Engg college.... they didn t have dress code at that time.. so the students gave least prefernce to their dressing sense.... they took a chance in such a way to dress in their own styles and also in the intention to attract others....
Dress code for College is a MUST.....

Angry Re: Dress code in Chennai colleges?

The dress code may seem to be a good Idea....but what boggles me is why is it always talked in terms of women...what about the men

Dont they have a responsibility to be civil???

For example in Chennai, a majority of the population walks with sarees, or salwars (with the duppatta more than decently worn). But still the rowdies, tease and cat call the girls, duppattas get pulled, girls get molested.......and yet we blame the women and ask them to cover up...

I don't think imposing more and more restrictions is the solution...

Some one needs to educate the Men and indoctrinate into the boys that Girls are equal and are NOT an object! Show some respect!
