The World of Spirits

The world of spirits has always been a fascinating subject for human beings. When I say ‘spirits’, I do not mean the bottled ones that come with a variety of intriguing names which are as intoxicating as their contents. What I mean is the ones that get separated from human bodies upon death. This is one mystery that man is unable to unravel except through his esoteric ruminations which are usually interspersed with mind-boggling words like Atma, prana, pretha etc that only confuse the uninitiated more and more. I have no intention of leading you through such a contemplative route but instead will discuss spirits as we know of them from stories and films.

Every one who has had the privilege of listening to their old aunts and grandmothers telling stories of kings pitted against spirits would have some rough idea about the habits and appearances of spirits. My maternal grandma was a firm believer in spirits and she kept seeing them in action now and then. Once she was spending a few days with me when I was working at Tuticorin. I had rented an old independent house there as I had my parents living with me and I had just got married. It was a spacious house with very large rooms and we were quite happy there, until of course my grandma arrived. The very first night of her arrival, she looked up at the ceiling and shouted ‘What are you doing here? Go away!’ On hearing her addressing an empty space, we were rattled. If I say, my blood froze on seeing her uncanny behaviour, it would be putting it mildly. From next day, everyone including my DW started seeing what my grandma was seeing and in less than three days, I became as pale as a dead fish in deep freezer. We waited for my grandma to leave after her horror-filled holiday with us and quietly changed the house thereafter!

Many people believe that there are benevolent spirits and evil ones. They try to communicate with the good ones through a ‘medium’ About a few decades back, a girl called Amudha was creating waves in Chennai with her ability to communicate with the dead. She was called ‘Aavi’ Amudha! I have seen people thronging to her séance to seek guidance from their dead ancestors on vexatious issues. When they were alive, they were just totally ignored! People believe that the spirits of the dead acquire special powers. There are a few Ouija Board operators who live around the Madras Race Club to predict the winning horses!

Many may not know that all spirits are not the same and they are classified according to their characteristics. Let us take a look at them one by one.

A good spirit is called ‘aavi’. They are invariably dressed in spotless white and they love dressing up with anklets, bangles, flowers et al. They put up their appearance at dead of night and move around very gracefully surrounded by a whiff of luminous white smoke. They sing very well and captivate people with lilting songs like ‘Naane varuven’ and ‘Naina barse rim jhim’. They do not disturb anyone unless you find their music disturbing. They are mostly jilted lovers who commit suicide. They have a nasty habit of vanishing when the desperately chasing man gets too close to them.

A ‘pei’ or ghost is the diametrically opposite version of ‘aavi’. They are very ugly and have a very bad dress sense. In fact, their ugliness is accentuated by the manner in which they dress. They dress to kill in the literal sense as many have been scared to death by their attire alone! They usually have two gaping holes where they had their eyes when alive. They hate music and are famous for making hideous noise to announce their arrival. Ghosts also are nocturnal creatures with a few exceptions like Alberto Moravia's Ghost at Noon! Their intentions are quite questionable and many even consider them evil. There may be an occasional well-intentioned like ‘Kalyanaraman’ who not only allows his brother to love the girl that he was himself in love with when alive but helps him to marry her too! They are all supposed to be spirits of people who get murdered.

Bootham and Pisasu are the same except that a bootham represents the spirit of obese people. Boothams are usually ravenously hungry in keeping with their size. There are many other versions of spirits and most of them are distinguished by their activities. The latest addition to the list is the ‘Kaadal pisasu’ (Love ghost). I do not have much information on this latest addition and would love to be enlightened by any of you who may have any first hand information about it!

Re: A peep into the world of the Dead!

sri,

A very controversial topic, according to me..then again I started laughing and am still laughing....

Kadal pisasu and azhagana rakshashiye are two terms i am trying to still decipher....kudos to the lyricist imaginations....
I would have loved to talk to your grandma....
Then coming to the movies, you have to appreciate how well they have learnt to differentiate the good and bad ghosts.

Jokes apart, there are still people who use oujha boards..have seen what happens at certain temples..though my practical mind says no...but what your eyes see defy all reasonings...again it is each ones' perpectives and experiences....

Last year before leaving muscat, there was this mms doing rounds..it was about a house in a place. there were too many noises, crying coming out of that house.so people went in and they hear a hair rising screams and whimpers simultaneously from the same room, and it is really so hard to believe and yet the proof is in front of your eyes...
the oman govt was thinking of getting some rituals done....

There is a very big building on the main roads in bahrain..which is assumed to be haunted...and no body goes there...even today they say if you could spend the night in that house, the building is yours...still nobody has been successfu.

let me not get carried away..let us see what others have to say....

Re: A peep into the world of the Dead!

Dear Shanthi
I was quite surprised to hear about the haunted houses in Middle East and that in Oman the Government itself was thinking of some pariharam. In south Tamilnadu and Kerala, there are professional ghost busters who conduct eerie rituals. A relative of mine from Trichy confided to me that the ghosts were more amiable than the ghost busters!
The argument in favour of good spirits arise out of the fact that when there can be good and bad people, why should all of them become bad and scary once they become ghosts and spirits. The Kollywood is very considerate of this fact and keep showing the spirits in as fair a manner as possible but the Hollywood guys always make them very cruel, hideous and blood thirsty! Even their unseen spirits are very cruel as we saw in the Exorcist.
It is high time that they recognise the good ones too!
Sri

BowDear Sri Sir,
Very interesting desciption of the ghost world!:shaking:
When I started learning Tamil privately just to read jokes and stories in Vikadan and kumudam,(We had English, Hindi,Sanskrit, and Malayalam in school) I had confusion in all these aavis..One that comes from coffee, one we inhale when we get cold(aavi pidikkirathu) all these dead ones coming in different get ups etc. You have classified them wonderfully well and now I think I will guess 'kaadal pisasu'
pisaasu- aatippadaikkirathu
when a girl conquers a man's heart and 'aattippadachify' him she is called kaadal pisasu. He is lost in her thoughts unable to eat, sleep or concentrate on any of his routines...
Any idea who is a 'Mayavi'?
RegardsBow

Dear Meena
I can see all the confusion about aavi as you rightly point out. I suppose one can sing in the lines of a famous old Tamil song,
Aavigal palavitham
Ovvondrum oru vitham!
The aavi that is very close to my heart is the one that comes out of a cup of Leo Coffee! That explanation of Kaadal Pisasu is quite acceptable but from what you write, it looks as if they always refer to the feminine. What would we call a young man if he produces similar effects in girls? In good old days, they used to sing,
Paalum Kasanthathadi Sakiye
Padukkayum nondhadi!
(The milk tastes sour and the bed becomes thorny!)

Cheeniya Sir,

Another classic masterpiece from you!

At last you have begun the pei-pedia (like Wikipedia) - the ultimate reference source for pei's. All along I had been thinking that they were all one. Now I stand (with feet touching the ground) enlightened about the various categories of pei's and aavi's.

My grandmother who belonged to Kerala used to tell us about "Kutty Chaathan's". From their name, I suppose they were small pei's or imps. They were very energetic and would swirl and twirl things from one place to another like a tornado.

There was a notorious gang of girls in my class and one of my friends used to call them "nadamaadum peikkal". That was the only time I had the privilege of being close to pei's and watching their activities.

Dear Cheeniya avargale...!

If it is not for our own Chitvish and the photos she shared with us, I would have wondered if you are closer to those spiritual beings as you bring them here in so many lively forms and images...like you know them personally....Ha ha ha [IMG]

The following quotes simply made me laugh aloud with my hubby wondering what 'pisasu' has attacked her now..!!....

-bottled ones that come with a variety of intriguing names which are as intoxicating as their contents
-
everyone including my DW started seeing what my grandma was seeing and in less than three days, I became as pale as a dead fish in deep freezer.
-Many people think that the first ‘pei’ came from Taipei and hence its name.
-
They dress to kill in the literal sense as many have been scared to death by their attire alone!
( Come to think of it, I could quote the 'whole' post!)

This piece about the ghostly spirits is another excellent example of your lively spirit and the spirit of your fine humor! And, another totally new facet to your already rich repertoire.

Don't know about the real ghosts and spirits, it brought back memories of numerous stories brought to us by the entertainment world. The one that shook me most was 'Exorcist' which was released at the time I was living in England, a country famous for its occult beings and haunted stately homes! After seeing the movie, every creaky noise in the house made me quiver for the next couple of weeks, if not more!!

And of course, I read your whole post to the tunes of 'aayega aayega', 'kahin deep jhale kahin dil', 'naina bharase', 'nenjam marappadillai' etc etc etc lilting in my mind....:))

Dear Sri,
After a pleasant evening with family, when I log in, what do I see? Pei, pisasu, ghost, pretha, spirit, bhootham – nothing is left unmentioned!
I wonder how I am going to sleep tonight ! As it is, I am regularly hearing “anklet sound” (kolusu chatham) around midnight from the next building where a girl is reported to have committed suicide two decades ago. Well, if I create an uproar tonight, I will hold you responsible, and you will be answerable to your dear friend.
When I was in my early teens, in Madurai, once late evening, I went alone to the terrace & got frightened by a cat which almost pounced on me ( now, don’t tell me, it was scared of me!). I rushed down screaming, but to “samalichufy”, I told a lie that I met a ghost ! I continued that story for quite sometime, more because I used to love the “koozh moru” my grandmother would give me, immediately !
But once in Chotanikara, I did see people who were said to be afflicted by ghosts. The scene was so scary & the sounds emanated by them were not human at all.
In and around Madurai “pei virattarathu” used to be a regular feature.
Now, Sri, at this age, do you really need to be enlightened by what Kadal Pisasu means?
High, rather vain hopes for your age, can’t help saying !
Love,
Chithra.

Dear Nivedi
Your mention of Kutti chathan reminds me of the 3D movie I saw years back titled 'My dear Kutty Chathan' Watching it at Satyam Theatre, I made as much noise as the kids who had thronged to see it. Every one was given special eye glasses to wear to get the full impact of 3D effect!

Like Kerala boasting of Kutty Chathans, Tamilnadu has its own brands like Kolli Vaai Pisasu, Ratha Katteri etc. How can we forget the benevolent Zee Boom Ba who can get you even a Tirupathi Laddu at dead of night!

But so many new names are getting added to the list that I tend to lose track of them!
Sri
